How does the waitlist process work? If a student is first on the waitlist for a class and the class opens up, how is the student notified? Is the student automatically registered or do they get an email that the class is open and they can register? If the student is automatically registered, what if the student has a class conflict during the time of the open class?

I just found the answer to my own question on the GWU website:

The academic unit offering the course will regularly monitor the waitlist. When a seat becomes available, the department will make contact with a waitlisted student to let them know that a seat has become available. The student will be given a deadline by which they must respond to confirm their continued desire to be registered for the class. If the student has registered for any other class(es) which conflict with the time of the waitlisted course, the student must drop the conflicted course(s) through GWeb immediately.

i had not heard about waitlists - how do you get on them?

1sttimemom- Only certain classes offer online waitlists. These are usually evident on the schedule of classes at the bottom of each class description. For example - language classes seem to offer lots of electronic waitlists, whereas UW 20 has no waitlists.

CJ - thanks muchly!

Also when you are notified that there is a spot for you, you must add the class via RTF-EZ form (Registration Transaction Form) it requires the Professor’s signature that is letting you in and you bring it to the Marvin Center. For some reason you cannot add the class you are waitlisted for on GWEB, probably because it would open it up to everyone else as well.

Thanks nyyankee! Do people start getting notified in the summer? If yes, do they then have to wait until classes start in August to add the class?

To answer some of your questions, I was waitlisted in a Spanish class. I was emailed by the head of the department yesterday saying that a spot had opened up for me. He had me fill out a form and I scanned it and attached it to the email that I sent back. He emailed me today stating that I will be enrolled in the class but it won’t appear on my schedule for a couple of weeks. Hope this helps…

He also said that they are trying to move quickly through the waitlists and you only have a week to reply to the email and claim your spot after they send it to you.

Thanks for the info, leepsyle! My S is hoping to get an email regarding a Spanish class.

Does anyone know if there’s a waitlist for the biology class?

Sciences classes tend not to waitlist, however, if it is BIO 11, i guarantee you 30 people will drop in the first week. It is a weeder class, and its sucessful, so you shouldnt have any problem getting into it.
