Class Wednesday?

<p>I was told by an upperclassman that classes are usually canceled the day before thanksgiving break. He said something about the governer canceling classes. Is this true? Something tells me its not but, it couldn't hurt to ask ;).</p>

<p>I think classes are often cancelled on the Wednesday before Thanksgiving. However, I think your friend was thinking of Good Friday cancellations.</p>

The Good Friday Holiday

… At Marquette, we always have Good Friday off, and in our Whitefish Bay, Wisconsin, school district, our kids always have Good Friday off. The public school always makes it part of “Spring Break,” even if Easter is in April, like last year. So, the kids and I had a “home day.” </p>

<p>The closing of public schools for Good Friday is an interesting conundrum. When I was in law school at Texas, we did not have Good Friday as a holiday. Later, during the five years that I taught at Texas Tech and U. of Houston (1998-2003), Good Friday was handled quite strangely. The day was not calendared as a holiday, so faculty and students had to plan on having class. However, on Good Friday morning, the Governor’s office (first under Bush, then under Rick Perry) would call and cancel classes for the afternoon. I actually think this is the worst solution because students who would like the holiday couldn’t plan on a holiday without assuming that they would miss class. The solution is even worse for faculty, who can’t just plan to “skip.” I only taught on Friday afternoon once in those five years, so the un-plan plan only affected me once.

<p>My professor cancelled class on Wednesday. One professor cancelled class on Tuesday too, but I have two others that day that aren’t cancelled. My TA discussion session on the last day of the semester (Dec. 4th) is also cancelled, but that’s kind of expected since the last day we meet as a class is the day before, so there isn’t really a need to meet.</p>

<p>The decision is up to the professor. It seems most will cancel and those remaining will not penalize you. They understand travel plans.</p>
