I'm looking at the political science department at Cal and notice that a lot of the interesting courses are already full...when are we going to be able to register and what the heck do we do if all the classes are full?

^serious?..we register at Calso…which i believe is in a month…maybe they save spots for transfers???

[UCB Online Schedule of Classes: Search Results](http://sis.berkeley.edu/OSOC/osoc?p_term=FL&p_dept=POLISCI&p_course=102)

Will they open up a few slots for transfers, or are we screwed?

are those lower division courses? that might be why. im not sure though but i wouldnt worry about it that much.

The reason why some of the classes are filled is because we just finished up phase I registration for classes. Berkeley has 2 phases.
Phase 1: register maximum of 10 units
Phase 2: register for the remaining units

For fall admits, they set up Calso in the months prior to phase 2 so that all transfer students have a chance to get at least some of their desired classes before phase 2 starts. It’s not guaranteed that you will get all of your desired classes that first semester but you will get into at least 1 or 2.
Whatever you do, make sure you do not miss Calso, every year I see people chose to not go and just have the registration code sent to them, however they don’t send that code out until after the Calso dates and people miss out registering for desired classes. Personally I would try to get the earliest Calso date possible. That’s just my 2 cents

Uh, I wouldn’t say that. Nothing is guaranteed.

There will be no more spots for transfers, if it’s full now there is a very slim chance you will be able to enroll in the course short of crashing it.

Also, the political science department recently introduced a new policy to place any non-declared political science majors on the waitlist for any upper-division political sciences courses in phase 1. This mean, unless you go to CalSo and declare, you will be automatically waitlisted for upper-division PS courses during phase 1.

ektaylor…that’s what I said, that there is no guarantees…and I have never heard of anyone not being able to get into at least one of their chosen classes, it’s never happened to me or any of my friends on campus & they are from a diverse group of majors…I suppose there is a first time for everything but I certainly wasn’t saying they were guaranteed anything. I just didn’t want them thinking that all the classes will be full by the time they go to Calso

I think I’m just going to go UCSD then.

nick…that example you posted is only one class, the top part is the lecture & the bottom two are the sections for that lecture class. That particular class has a required section. However I do understand your concern because some of the classes are full, but there are still classes available. Were you planning on declaring when you went to Calso?

I applied as a history major and this semester I’m finishing the second of the two pre-requisites for political science, which is the major I’d now like to pursue. This I must admit is a bit discouraging.

So the first one is the big classroom and the next two are the discussions with a GSI? I’m thinking I’m going to try and take 13 units and just pick classes that I’m interested in though might not be in my major per se…and thereon take major classes. Does that seem like a good plan?

Thats how I plan on doing things too Nick

Wait, what? Discussion sections are part of the lecture (big classroom as you have it). If you’re a political science major I would definitely take PS3 your first semester. I’m sure you can get into the under-division courses if you tried – what do you need to take?
