Classes and GEs

I’m a Computer engineering major. I would like some advice about which classes to take in my first quarter this fall.
Also, do we have to be prepared with a schedule before we register for classes at orientation, or could we first discuss and get advice from the orientation leader and plan our schedule on the spot? Because I have no idea how to plan my GE classes for the whole year, or at least the first quarter.
help?

If you are attending orientation, your Orientation leader will advise you on what classes you should be taking first quarter. They will expect you to come up with several choices in case classes are full. They will have a transcript of any AP classes you have taken, how many units of credit you will receive and a list of GE requirements you need to fulfill. Throughout the year, you will meet with a GE advisor and/or Department Academic advisor to keep you on track. The second day of orientation is when you will register for your classes, so you are given plenty of time to plan out a schedule. Most Freshman 1st quarter will take between 13-15 units to become familiar with the quarter system.
What you need to do prior to registration is to take the assessment tests such as Math and Chemistry or you will be unable to register for those type of classes.

Okay, so basically the only thing I need to be prepared for are the placements.
I just have a question about the GE requirements. So we can choose an of these: http://catalog.ucdavis.edu/PDF/14AGenCatGEOpts.pdf</a> courses to fulfil each category of GE requirements?
And in addition to regular classes and GE, we also have to do a university writing program? I’m not sure what that is or which classes we need to take for that.
Also since I’m in the college of engineering, the Science and Engineering part of the GER is already taken care of right?

And thanks for your help @Gumbymom‌!

Oh, also do students spread their GE courses through out the 4 years, or…?

Yep, they spread their GE courses throughout 4 years.

There are specific GE classes called UWP (University Writing Program) such UWP1 which can be replaced with an English Literature class if you prefer. Also my son (Environmental Major) has to take a specific UWP for his major.

You don’t have to spread your GEs, though I’d recommend spreading them regardless just so you’re not taking too many difficult major classes each quarter.

And yes, because you’re in engineering your science/engineering GEs will be taken care of.
