HI, I am a freshman in high school and i was wondering about the courses to take in Sophmore year.this year I am taking Comp Sci., hon.Glob studies, Freshman English, P.E., Algebra I, and Bio.I want to major in Computer Science and I was wondering if I wanted to take AP Comp Sci and Spanish II as my electives or Chem and Spanish II as my electives(I am taking Spanish I over the summer if you are wondering).
I put this in parent forum because I courses for high school wasn’t availible
Thank you.
Look at the total four year HS experience. Think about all of the science courses you want to have taken by graduation and when you could/would take them. AP Physics sometimes replaces regular physics but most often students need chemistry before AP chemistry (even for gifted kids). Think about your math courses- it does not look like you will take calculus in HS. Consider your strengths (and weaknesses). Some can easily handle many science courses at once (including the AP versions) but many should limit the numbers at one time.
It is a good idea to have four years of a foreign language as many colleges have requirements for a minimum number of years and/or you need it to be competitive for admissions. Depending on the college you may be able to use your HS Spanish to meet the college foreign language requirements if there are any.
As far as honors versus AP sometimes scheduling conflicts determine which course is taken. Happened to my son. He was an honors math major in college and added the computer science major. He got coveted CS jobs after college. He took no computer science in HS- the one semester he wanted to there was a conflict.
btw- give as few personal/identifying details as possible in public forums. This includes names- I reported your post, perhaps a deletion can occur.
At this stage it is possible you change your mind about your college major later on. It sounds like STEM fields are what you will end up with. Get a broad HS education, including those non math/science fields.
Discuss your plans with your guidance counselor- get that professional input. With that information acquired you should also discuss options with your parents. With your Indian sounding name I suspect they may be immigrants like my husband and not as knowledgeable about the US school system at this time.
There are many paths you can take to get accepted into colleges that match your goals.
