S tells me that due to the bowl game, classes are canceled 1/6. 1/7, and 1/8 and students don’t have to return to campus from winter break until 1/12 rather than 1/6. Can anyone confirm?

Ugh, I just booked his flight to come home for break.

Who told your son that? My son checked his email and he doesn’t have any message. Is this a rumor? I find this hard to believe since only a small number of students would actually have tickets for the game. but, I could be wrong.

He heard this from a bunch of different people who said that the university did this for the last big bowl game. He also said that it was not really about students being at the game, but more that students would be unfocused. I also have not been able to confirm - wishful thinking on the part of the students…?

AFAIK, it is a rumor that may become true. If it is true and some of my friends would be going to Pasadena, I may join them, game ticket or not. I’m patiently waiting for the e-mail.

Did this last happen when the school was much smaller?

The school will get a lot of complaints from families who’ve booked their holiday flights if the school doesn’t open the dorms during those days.

I doubt that will happen. Maybe the professors will be nice and “cancel” their classes. It would only be two days missed. I know I’m skipping class regardless of what the administration does.

I don’t know what to think. The National Championship is on Thursday at 7pm. On one hand it makes sense to cancel classes since traveling to and from the game would (at a minimum) be on Wed and Friday.

Obviously, this is a pain in the tush for those who’ve made flight plans - which are typically made at least 7-14 days before school ends. So, either those kids need to rebuy their return flights (not their depart flights) or come back early.

I imagine a new return flight is going to cost at least $200 more. Ugh. But, maybe not since the date will be further away from Jan 1st. I guess as soon as people know “for sure” (likely tomorrow), parents will have to look at new return flight prices. pooh!

Has anyone called the University to confirm this rumor?

Southwest Airlines does not charge for flight changes. My son booked his flights on SW. We realized the cost of long term parking would be greater than the cost of the shuttle service. The travel time by car is almost 12 hours each way. Since he will be home for 3 weeks, we decide to have him drive home. I fly into Birmingham Thursday after his last exam. We will share the time behind the wheel and stop for the night mid way home. If this rumor is true, the drive back to Tuscaloosa will be adjusted. My flight back from BHM will need to be changed.

I just called the Office of the Provost, Dr. Judy Bonner and spoke to her ass’t. She said that the school has been in a meeting dealing with this issue since early this morning. There are a lot of things to consider, including that some new students will be starting school that week and need to go thru orientation.

As soon as they have all the concerns addressed, they will post an announcement on the website and/or send emails out to the students (The ass’t wasn’t sure which they would do.) The ass’t said that the phone has been ringing off the hook with parents wondering.

It really is a tough decision. The school now has nearly 30,000 students and the overwhelming majority won’t be going to the game. It would seem like it would be better to just cancel classes for Thursday and recommend that profs keep instruction light on Wed and Friday to accomodate the students who will be missing classes. But, who knows :)

What I think they will do (and what is best to do, in my opinion) is not cancel classes but tell faculty to not count attendance until the Monday after the game. There are too many people who are not going to the game to just cancel classes for no reason.

Well, at least the dorms will be open for those who can’t change their travel plans.

I just don’t think it’s necessary to totally cancel school.

Well, parents, call your airlines now, and find out how much a new flight would cost. Or find out if another airline will give you a cheaper one way flight return.

I guess it is an admission by the administration that thousands of student were going to skip classes anyway to go to California, even if they didn’t have tickets. I think that’s what sad more than anything else.
