Classes Cancelled on Monday, Jan 6

Severe weather ? Classes and non-essential activities canceled for Monday, Jan. 6 | UChicago News

yes -flight all cancelled so my son cannot fly back until Tuesday
I would imagine that the school is aware that many students cannot return until Tues and will not penalize

Same here, marsha. :frowning:
Woke up at 4 am to take our son to the airport and they announced the cancellation just as he was about to check in . SWA is telling us that Wednesday is the earliest he will be able to fly.

Southwest Flights to Milwaukee are still operating.

There is a bus from Mitchell Airport to O’hare
[Wisconsin Coach Lines | O’Hare Airport](http://www.coachusa.com/wisconsincoach/ss.ohareairport.asp)

Also a 20 year old can rent a car from Hertz.

UWHuskyDad: If you don’t mind saying, are you in Seattle or close to it? We are in the same boat, but we’ve been able (we think) to schedule a SWA flight Tuesday morning.

We are living in a small world, kaukauna.
He is now on standby for tomorrow’s flight. Forecast for tomorrow’s high is -12 and I won’t be surprised if flights get cancelled again. In a way, I am glad that he didn’t leave yesterday. Apparently all cafeterias except Bartlett were closed during the last major snowstorm.

they told mu son ( I was not with him ) that he could fly on Tuesday
I guess bc this is all weather related it can change from hour to hour
If all airports nationwide are cancelled then it would appear that there wil be many students unable to fly back to be in time for class on Tuesday. I wonder if they would consider cancelling class Tuesday just to allow more time for everyone given the situation.
We had the same (not as bad ) when he flew in for winter recess- His flight was cancelled bc of snow in NY but he was able to fly the next day. Sooo frustrating for everyone .

My son was supposed to fly back to Chicago from Minneapolis Friday afternoon, and he didn’t make it to Chicago until yesterday (Sunday) evening. And counted himself lucky to get back then – his plane was delayed several hours.

My freshman got stuck till Wednesday (the earliest possible reschedule). Does she need notify anyone at school?

She should email all of her professors.
Also, notify friends in her classes and get the work from them.

Sekwht, I would have her email her professors and her RH’s. Evidently a tally is being taken tonight of those who have made it back and those who are missing. Good luck to her. My S’s twice-rescheduled flight made it there this morning from BWI, but roads in Chicago are horrible.

My son was able to catch the first flight out of SEA this morning.

Tomorrow’s weather forecast isn’t looking a whole lot warmer, especially when wind chill is factored in. I guess the school will make further decisions a day at a time. Son was unusually lucky: all flights out of LGA were cancelled yesterday, but we had booked him months ago out of EWR based simply on price and those flights went off, albeit late. His evening flight was delayed only about an hour. The taxi line at Midway was moved indoors so another concern of ours was alleviated. We’re getting single digits here in the NYC area tomorrow; I can’t imagine what -12 feels like, let alone -30 with the wind chill. Chicago: such a great city with such (often) weird/bad/changeable/uncomfortable weather…

My D has just reported she has got to dorm.

It is her first Chicago winter. Let’s see how it goes…

It has been announced that Classes resume Tuesday
[Weather update: Classes resume Tuesday, Jan. 7 | UChicago News](Weather update: Classes resume Tuesday, Jan. 7 | University of Chicago News)

Why would they hold classes on Tuesday?

NOAA weather forecast as of 3pm Monday, says.

  • WIND CHILLS…35 BELOW ZERO TO 45 BELOW ZERO THROUGH MIDDAY
TUESDAY. THESE FORECAST WIND CHILLS ARE THE LOWEST IN NEARLY 20
    YEARS.

How about one more day hunkered down in the warm dorms and start on Wednesday! Especially with so many students still making their way to campus.

and 1800 flights canceled at O’Hare today

“THESE FORECAST WIND CHILLS ARE THE LOWEST IN NEARLY 20
YEARS.”

This is nothing in comparison to January/February 1985 when there were 33 days in a row that the daytime high temperature did not go above 0˚F. I did most of my running indoors at the Henry Crown Field House.
