Classes [Freshman]

hey guys!

ok i used the ERC four year plan thingy and here is waht my idea is:
im still thinking about which math to take, but i seem to be familiar with all the calculus concepts [and will do a bit of brushing up]
[li]so i plan on taking 20C [because i got a 5 on my AP CALC BC]
[/li]

Now since it has been like two years since i took chemistry, i figure teh best thing to do is brush up as much infor as possible, and just start with

[li] Chemistry 6A [though is it smart to take 6B?, I got a 3 on my Chem exam]
[/li]

[li]Since i am in ERC, i have to take the MMW 11 :( so that's not an option
[/li]

And as for my last course [my GE] is there any recommendations? I will probably want a sciency class, but maybe computer related or something is cool.
I was thinking about taking Physics, but i wanted to ask first before i dedicate myself to that.

As a final question, what about honors courses? should i take those? I mean i know that answer: Take it if you want to. But i was going for something beyond that, like the pros and cons, etc to help me decide whether or not i want to take those type of courses

I really appreciate the help!!

thanks CC

If you want to go to med school you have to take an entire sequence of Chemistry, so you have to take 6A anyways. Chemistry honors is apparently very difficult, so I would not take it if I were you unless you truly enjoy Chemistry and want a challenge.

@justmyview
hmm thank you. ill stick with normal chem for now, just because it has been almost three years since my last chem class [though i did love chemistry], maybe after i get more familiar ill start taking honors
thanks

lolz, while writing the post, i seem to have forgotten what GE means xD
haha, ill double check what the ERC GE’s are and choose something
but recommendations are always welcome!!

I’m in ERC and for your Art GE’s I’d recommend taking a film class (TDGE). They usually meet 3 hours once a week. They’re easy, barely an hw, and free up your schedule.

spatel, you got in!! I remember reading all your chance me posts. congrats! You’ll love it here!

and if you want a computer-y course see if you can take CSE 8A. It’s a intro to java course which is quite easy and interesting too. and you’ll learn some programming which is a very handy skill to have. And the professor, Ord is great! But I don’t know if it would fulfill any erc ge’s though.

here is what i have so far:

  1. Math 20C w/ Dragos Oprea
[i have a question, for the discussion, it says that the class is full with 3 wait listed… im a bit confused about what that means]

2.MMW 11 [ERC GE]
well im confused between Jordan, David K. and duBois, Page Ann
any recommendations?

Chem 6A
confused between Sailor, Mike and Crowell, John
tempted to take Sailor but would like more opinions :D

TDGE25: Public Speaking w/ Ursula Meyer
i’ve looked everywhere and i have no idea who she is [except for the brief description on UCSD] is she good, bad,
is this class good/bad?
well apparently all the classes she teaches has 0 availability, but still confused about this [see below]

so what does:
“Total Seats:
Avail. Seats:
Wait List:”
exactly mean. it frustrates me so much because i have no idea what it refers to and almost all the classes have this!!!
here is an image: https://lh5.googleusercontent.com/-9hmaxzAzL5k/TlVTiHHLtvI/AAAAAAAAARo/euv18e9eeRs/s800/Untitled.jpg

also can you explain the difference between a lecture, discussion, and lab [for TDGE], and what exactly are discussions about?

Also, which other class would one recommend for No. 4, if i dont get into TDGE 25

EDIT: what should be the approximate waiting time between classes. many of mine are about 10 minutes apart, is this bad?

EDIT 2: Im really sorry for all these questions, nervous yet excited

Total seats is the number of students that can be admitted into a class. Available seats is the number of seats that are still open. Wait list means that all the available seats have been taken and that you may not get into the class unless someone drops. If there are 3 people on the wait list for your 20C discussion it means that 3 people need to drop that discussion for all of the wait listed people to get in.

MMW 11: They changed the program this year so I’m not exactly sure what time period you guys will be covering but what we did was mostly homonids and different types of societies. Jordan is an anthropologist by trade so the class topics really go well with that. On the upside, his lectures are supposed to be really interesting. However, he is notorious for making his students memorize the exact names of a bunch of homonids. In fact, his tests are so difficult that his class has a curve. Despite this, all of my friends that took Jordan said that they enjoyed his class. duBois is a literature professor who specializes in feminism and women’s issues. Her class seems to revolve mostly around the topic of sex. People gave mixed reviews about her.

CHEM 6A: I took the series with entirely different professors but the people I have talked to seem to prefer Sailor.

If you don’t get into your last class, I recommend you take something that fulfills the regional specialization requirement.

ok thanks,
so umm is it possible to get into a lecture and not a discussion? or how does that work? are discussion necessary or?

You HAVE to sign up for a discussion with your lecture. Sometimes the discussion sections are optional, but you still have to be in one.

also, any reviews for Todd Kemp and Matthew Duane Hyatt, im trying to decide which prof is better for Match 20c.
the reviews on Kemp is mostly for math 180A and hyatt isnt on rate my professor nor CAPE

^I took Crowell for CHEM 6B and didn’t like his lecturing. Maybe he teachers 6A better. I don’t know. His tests were fair though and he’s a really nice person but I didn’t have the best experience with them. I know nothing about Sailor though so I can’t compare them.

And to answer your question about having 10 minutes in-between classes, most of the time it’s perfectly fine. You can get from most classes to most classes in 10 minutes. One thing I’m very mildly concerned about is that it looks like you have to go from WLH to York on Thrusdays from 1:50-2:00, correct? It’s probably going to take you a tad over 10 minutes and I know TGDE 25 is a small class, but the professor will probably be alright with it. If anything you can just tell her that your might be a minute or two late and she’ll most likely understand.

@adl0816
im a bit confused over that.
like you have to have a discussion, thus you must chose the class that has space for the discussion, right?
like what i mean is say i want to take Math 20C w/ Oprea
i have no clue if his lecture is full, but all of his discussion times are full. Can i not choose Oprea? Is it better to chose a prof. that has spots in the discussion? i think this is what confuses me the most. Like, what should my move be?

EDIT: well all of Oprea’s discussions are full with about 5-9 wait lists [wait, incoming freshman can’t wait list right, until their course registration date?]

EDIT 2: who is Miles Jones? Rate My Prof. has no reviews on him, any one familiar with him?

Yes, if a professor’s discussions are all full, then that means there are no more spots open at their lecture. You have to sign up for a discussion that has spots open or waitlist.

@spatel23

Here. I’ll try explaining this a different way. Maybe it will help. Many classes at UCSD that are large and lecture based have these things called discussion sections (also referred to sometimes as just “discussion” or “section”) associated with them. A discussion section is a weekly class with around 20-40 people from your class where you are with a TA (teaching assistant) and you go over the material or take quizzes. Some professors have their discussion sections mandatory while others don’t. They’ll tell you at the beginning of the quarter.

Now for what discussion sections mean for enrollment. Most classes that have discussion sections enroll by their discussion sections (a notable exception being biology classes which are different). Here’s what I mean by that, when you look at one of these classes, all you really see is the number of places for each discussion section. The sum total of all the discussion section spots IS the size of the class. So if all the sections are full, that means the class is full. And let’s say all the sections are full except for one which has 2 open spots, that means there are 2 open spots in the class but you have to sign up for that section to get that spot in the class, otherwise you’ll be waitlisted in another section. What wailisting is, is signing up for a class but not getting into it because it’s full. At that point you get on a list where if people in the class drop, the top people on the list get into the class. The thing with enrolling into a section is, you only get into the class if the people from YOUR section drop out, not any of the other sections. I personally think it’s a strange system but it is what it is.

Looking at Oprea’s class, it’s possible they could open more spots for freshmen so keep an eye on it as it gets towards your time to sign up. If it stays full like that, there are other open lectures so you’ll definitely be able to take MATH 20C this fall (unless some freak scheduling accident happens or something).

I know things seem confusing right now but don’t worry. Once you get here you’ll become a master of this stuff in really no time at all. At lot of us have been doing this for quite a while so some of it seems so obvious to us that it’s sometimes difficult to see what could be confusing because we don’t even think twice about it. But trust me, I was where you are coming in as a freshman not that long ago so it’s totally understandable. :)

awesome thank you adl0816 and $KingsElite$.
I get it now!!

as a last question, does anyone have any idea who the following people are:
1.Miles Jones
2.Todd Kemp
3.Matthew Duane Hyatt

If you can’t find them on CAPE, it’s likely they’re new and/or not a permanent professor at UCSD. They could be guest lecturers or phd/grad students. It’s down to chance…remember you can add classes up till week 2, so if you really want to see which prof’s better you can attend their lectures and jump ship (room permitting).

You can still read Kemp’s reviews and try to pick up general tips about his teaching style and whatnot  and google the names just to see what you get. For example, I googled “miles jones” ucsd and found he was a TA for math20b in 2007, and has also TA’d for math20d and 20f.

as of now there are barely any waitlists on the courses i have selected, so i think when i sign up for my classes, ill stick with these [though out of curiosity, would it be smart to go for classes with 0 availability for the first semester freshman year?]

also, which is more reliable the class planner or the Schedule of Classes… im getting different info [for the classes] on each. the Schedule of Classes has more waitlists then what the class planner tells me :(

The only section that really matters is WebReg, which is the same as the Class Schedule except you can select the classes. I think the Class Planner is a little outdated at times.

ok thanks guys!!

i have just completed myplanner and things seem to be amazing, except my classes are really far apart.

on M/W i have free time from 9-11:30; 1-3:30
on T/TH 12:30 - 3:00

and Friday it’s from 9-11:30…

im planning on spending the entire time in the library studying and doing homework… im getting the feeling that it’s going to be really really boring like that, any other ideas?

If you live on campus you can always head back and nap, chill…I hung out with friends whenever we had the same gaps, take a long lunch or sometimes take the bus to UTC. You can always hit up rimac for a workout or do an early morning campus loop run. There are also a ton of random seminars and activities hosted every day by the zone or random orgs  I remember the zone had free yoga sessions and dance classes once a week or so, and there were health panel debates during lunch hours.
