Hey CC i was wondering if you guys thinking taking a sat class is nesscary. I don't really think so since i feel like I can study by myself but I am not a good writer so I don't know how i could check the essay. What do you guys think should i take the class? Also any classes you suggest more so than others? Thanks for the help

the collegeboard online course doesn’t have readers grade the essay. It’s basically a computer. You’re going to get high grades on the essays even if you barely put in effort into that courses prompts .

An SAT class (~$400-500, upwards $2000) probably isn’t worth the money. Usually, self-studying the material is sufficient.

Yeah, the computer only checks grammar, spelling, and a few other factors. I somehow got an 11 on that essay, even though I got 8’s on the actual test…

Are you saying that you got an 8 on an essay that the computer scored as an 11? Because that would be a really interesting experiment – if lots of people took their actual essays from their score reports and re-entered them into the on-line grading thingy, we could get a sense of how accurate the on-line grader is… (Or maybe this is just nuts and I should stick with math…)

Are there any books that could help me improve my essay score?

I would just get the college board SAT book and take as many practice tests as you can. I would also really suggest the Princeton Review book, because it gives you tips and thorough explanations.

If you’re the type of self-starter who can honestly commit to a preparatory regimen, then there’s no need to throw down that sort of a change on a prep class. If you need a stable schedule of classes to focus your concentration, however, then a class might not be the worst thing to do.

@pckeller That would be an interesting experiment. The 11 and 8 essays were not the same (even though I wrote both of them, and my essays don’t fluctuate that much…). I think the computer’s essay score is more likely to be predicted by grammar, spelling, and length, not by actual essay score.

Is their a section of cc were i could get essays graded?

@jeffisaboss yes, users post their own practice essays for critique, but virtually no one on CC is an actual SAT grader.
