I was under the impression that 2014 was supposed to be the peak of admission competition and for 2015, 2016 etc. it's supposed to drop. Am I wrong in thinking this? What have you guys heard?

I would certainly like to see a drop in admission competition :)

With the increasing multiplicity in colleges applied, it won’t shrink anytime soon. Ten years ago, people applied to 5-6 normally – and that’d be considered high. Now I wonder if people aren’t applying to 8-10 as normal fare…

Plus the easier access to apply by internationals — you get the picture.

It’s only going to go down, thanks in most part to the fact that people now regularly apply to 12+ schools. I think 10 should be the absolute limit. Meh.

There are two trends: 1) The baby-boom echo is ending, so there will be fewer college age kids in the USA. That should tend to push admit rate down, but 2) the ease of applying on-line (common app., etc) + increased willingness for top students to apply to colleges far from home + plus more internationals will push the admit rate down further.

At the end of the day, it is going to get tougher to get into the top-tier schools, but should ease up a bit in most of the others. Nobody really knows, however.

^^^^Sorry - fewer USA student will tend to push admit rate up.
