Classes that meet once a week

how many of you have had or have classes that meet just one day a week? how are they workload wise? (i'm guessing a bigger workload, and obivously a longer amount of time that you're there for the 1 day) would you take a 1-day-a-week class again? if anyone's had any experiences with it i'd love to hear them :) (it doesn't have to answer the specific questions i just asked, i just want to kind of have a heads up of what to expect)

thank you! :)

I don't have a class that meet once a week but twice a week, and I hate it. Since we only meet twice a week, there is an online portion to the class,so we must do things online that takes more time than being in class for only 3 days a week.

Depends heavily on what the class is. I've had one most semesters and they've usually been fine for me. Obviously, they will assign more work each time but you get a whole week to do it. Problem is, if you're a really bad procrastinator, then it may not be a good idea as you will do all of the work the night before and it's a lot of it.

It depends on how many credit hours it is. I'm in a pass/fail class that meets once a week and is only worth half a credit hour. It has pretty much no work at all. If you are taking a higher credit hour class that only meets once a week, though, you'll have more work.

Once a Week Is Not Enough

Most students love them. Some instructors swear by them. A number of administrators see them as a way to get through the curriculum with less fuss. But there’s a problem with once-a-week courses: They almost always fail.

The problem is that unless the subject is one that does well in a traditional lecture-type format, the content cannot be delivered properly in one shot.

I had a 4 hour long class at NIGHT!!!! It was pure agony and we only met 9 times but it felt like alot more and I would not recommend any one to do it. On the other hand my 3 day a week 50 minute class was a breeze and felt like it went by super fast even though we met alot more then my one nighter.

Any evening lecture class that is 2+ hours can feel like torture, especially after attending classes or working all day. Having to go to a class 4 or 5 days a week was too much like hs. A one day a week class has to be interactive for me.

I would need to move around and talk in any class that was more than 2 hours long.

Next quarter all 3 of my classes meet once a week for 3 hours. They all have small enrollments (18 and 20 students). Schedule was designed to give me more time for work/internship/ECs.

The workload generally isnt too different from other classes. I actually prefer meeting less because I'd rather just cover everything at once. I tend to lose sight of the earlier material if we only cover it for 50 minutes and then jump to something else 2 days later. The sitting doesn't bother me but I may have built a resistance because I started taking 3 hour long evening classes at a CC when I was in high school.

I certainly wouldnt want to take a math or science class in this format, but it's always worked well for my social science courses.

Just so everyone knows, I'm taking it for an Intro to Humanities course (and it's during the day, from about a little after 1 til 350)

thanks for all the comments everybody! and thank you for the link gspsiliconvalley :)

The only one-day-per-week classes I've had are labs.

I have the same scenario as #10...though all classes after 6 p.m. are once a week. Same with any Saturday classes.

Depends on the subject. They seem cool. Do alot of colleges offer them?

I had an English Writing class that met once a week for 2 hours and a half. it was enough...trust me.

I will also be taking another class that is once a week this spring (unless i change my scheudle again).....the only thing i hate about it is sitting there for that long...but you usually get a break after about an hour or so. Depending on the teacher you could have 10 to 15 minute pauses.

It is not unsual to attend classes once a week in grad school

We have a lot of seminar classes. The meet from ~1:30-4:30 once a week. If the class is good, it's fine. But mine sem was dreadful, and I sometimes I just wanted to kill myself half-way through.

I say go for it if it's a course you're actually interested in taking. If not, then maybe it will be offered more than once a week next semester.
