classes to take senior year?

I'm probably going to be some kind of science major so I can get into med school later. The only AP classes I have taken so far are AP Bio, APUSH, AP Computer Science, and AP Lang.

Classes I have to take are:
AP Lit
AP Calculus AB
AP Eco/AP Gov't
(Or should I take AP Eco/AP Gov't in summer school and take the stupid required Health credit in school with AP Psychology to lessen work load during the year? otherwise I have to take in online in the summer)

I have slots for 7 classes so I need help in choosing a combination of 4 more:
Orchestra (already in for 3 years, not sure if i should continue)
AP Latin Vergil
AP Physics B
AP Chemistry
OR independent study program off-campus with research and internship of choice

I would really appreciate the help and would like to know what some of you guys are taking.

Continue orchestra. Colleges will like that. Take AP Latin, AP Psych, and AP Chem on top of that.

Why do colleges like to see you continue orchestra?

The internship sounds appealing, personally.

AP psychology is only a one semester course, not sure about that. yes, the internship is appealing. I like both chem and physics, i sort of want to drop latin and take both.

Taking a course for 4 years demonstrates interest in the area along with continuity, and colleges like both of these factors.

take: orchestra
reason: riku92mr was right; the admissions process seems to highly value continuity and the commitment it displays

take: AP Physics B
reason: since you are required to take AP Calc AB, my suggestion would be to pursue the science with the most overlap. I know that Physics B is not calc-oriented like Physics C, but I took Honors Physics with AB as a junior and benefitted from their convergences. Don’t overwhelm yourself with Physics, Chem, and Calc. It is inadvisable since you will have to simultaneously complete the application process; even if you are intellectually capable of handling all three, there is really not enough time to complete the lengthy nightly work that they each entail.

take: AP Latin Vergil
reason: colleges like to see 4 years of each of the five main subject areas (Math, Science, English, Foreign Language, History) and neglecting a foreign language in your senior year might be noticed by admissions committees presented with a myriad of other highly qualified candidates. This is the same reason that you should stick to Econ/Gov instead of Psych; keep your History course.

take:the internship
reason: this is not an option available at every school and besides the uniqueness it would lend to your application next year, it could also serve as a personally enriching experience in ways that another AP course could not. I think, assuming you take full advantage of the opportunity, that it could distinguish you from amongst the pool of over-achievers =)

Good luck!

^ thanks for the amazing advice. I do actually have the option to take Calculus BC, but it’s only offered one period and I have scheduling conflicts. :frowning: would it look bad?

People who have done the internship got to mentor with heart surgeons and see live surgeries, so that’s pretty cool.

You’re very welcome! I am currently in the midst of scheduling my senior year schedule, as well, and I too am having some difficulty determining which classes will give me an edge in admissions while not staving off sleep altogether!

Actually, my high school only offers BC after a full year of AB. I wouldn’t worry, you are still [obviously] challenging yourself! I think your counselor could probably include a note about the scheduling conflict in your recommendation letter, though.

I’m very jealous of your internship option! Maybe I’ll broach the topic with my own guidance counselor (=

Wait, do you have to choose either the classes OR the internship, or the internship over ONE of the classes?

the internship basically counts as one class, and i need to choose four.

Ohhh. In that case, go with orchestra, internship, AP Latin, and AP Chemistry. I think chem will help you in college moreso than physics with your med school future in mind.
