Classes to take to become a physician or psychiatrist?

Im thinking of attending UR next fall and I am wanting to become a physician or psychiatrist. What kinds of courses and classes should I be taking during my freshman, sophomore, junior and senior year in order to go to med school?

Psychiatrists are physicians.

There are a pretty standard set of courses that all medical schools require:

2 semesters general chem w/ labs
2 semesters organic chem w/labs
2 semesters general physics w/labs
2 semesters general bio w/labs
2 semesters “college level” math --generally interpreted to mean Calc 1 and either Calc 2 or statistics
freshman writing

Some medical schools have additional specific requirements including but not limited to: genetics, biochem, calc 2, human anatomy, physiology, psychology, microbiology, 2 upper level humanities, a second semester of writing, one upper level English class.

Med school admission requirements can and do change. You will need to check with the specific medical schools you’re interested in before you register for your junior year classes to see what specific coursework they require.

Most students who intend to apply to medical school take WRT 105; BIO 110-111 or 112-113 plus labs; CHM 131-132 plus labs, MTH 141 or 161 or 171; plus 2 other classes as their freshman schedule.

During freshman orientation, potential pre-meds will have a chance to attend a pre med info session which will explain course planning and med school pre-reqs.

Most medical schools will NOT accept AP or IB credits for any required coursework. The most common exception seems to be Calc AB or BC, but school policies vary widely and you will need to check with each school.
