Is the class GT 1000 mandatory and/or useful? How many hours does one need to devote to this? Who is the best instructor for this? Any recommendations/tips will be appreciated.

How many credit hours should a freshman take in the first semester?

No, it’s not mandatory in most cases, though certain special programs may require it. It is generally regarded as being a big waste of time but it doesn’t require much time outside of going to class and the occasional assignment. It’s hard to say who the good instructors are as there are so many, but it doesn’t really matter as your group leaders are who you are going to have the most interaction with. And don’t kill yourself… keep it to 14-16 hrs your first semester, or maybe even less.

I would definitely suggest taking a GT1000 class if it’s offered for your major. I took one and I learned why we have to take certain classes, how to put together a resume, what clubs related to my major exist, etc. They even had people from the industry come and talk to us, which was really neat.

On the other hand, the general GT1000 classes are pretty useless, but they are a GPA boost if you bother.

And I agree with RmblinReck. 14-16 hours is the best bet.
