Classes

Right now I am a sophomore in my high school, I am taking all honors classes. I am very interested in going to college and getting into medicine. I just wanted to get some advice on classes I should take before I apply to colleges so that it will look good on my resume

If your school has an AP Curriculum… I would advise taking at least some of these AP classes to get you ready for medicine.

AP Biology (almost a must for med people)
AP Chem (not as important)
AP Physics B/C (ehh… if you have time)
AP Calculus AB/BC (as important as Chem)

The most challenging set of courses your HS has.

AP Chem and Physics should be avoided for most pre-meds unless you end up going to a college which will let you cherry pick which credits you receive for qualifying scores (technically, the classes are fine, if you can squeeze by not taking the exam at the end, which is not always an option). The problem is, most colleges take an all or nothing approach to giving out AP credit, and, even if you find a couple of schools that will allow you to take the credits from say AP English, but not Chem…you don’t necessarily know that that’s where you’ll end up attending.

The issue with AP Chem and Physics is that the intro level courses are all that’s required for medical school, and you must assume that med schools want you to have actually taken college courses for those requirements (not just fill them with awarded credit), because the majority of med schools WON’T accept AP credit. Further, particularly in Chem and Physics (at least when compared to Bio) the upper level courses you’d have to take to fulfill the college course requirements are significantly more difficult than their intro counterparts. You’d end up having to take some sort of ridiculous physics (I’m not really sure what’s even past general physics 1 and 2…it doesn’t show up on the MCAT that’s for sure). And chemistry classes like analytical chem or physical chem just don’t seem like good ideas when you could take general chem…

Bottom line…AP credit is not always a good thing. Avoiding it in certain subjects will make your life easier as a pre-med…
