Classic Matchup- Duke vs. UNC-Chapel Hill

Which one is the tougher to get into from OOS and ED/EA? I like both schools, but I was just wondering which one is harder. Albeit an old version (2004 maybe), Fiske Guide said Duke is easier on OOS than Carolina, so would this mean I'd have a better chance at Duke from OOS? This sounds unrealistic because Duke is a lesser ivy type selective school? let me know please. btw if u need to check my stats, do find more posts by california_love8 and check for chances posts. btw I'm posting this in the carolina forum 2, so dont call me out for this since I'm saying it up front

unc generally admits less than 20% of its OOS applicants. So is it harder to get into? maybe. I'd put UNC oos and Duke on the same level.

The only part I would call you out on is "lesser ivy type selective school," but beyond that, note that UNC is a "public ivy" and quite difficult to get into out of state - both because of state regulations regarding the number of out of state students it can accept and because of the high quality of student they attract to their admissions pool.

Just to bring in some numbers... 6740 applicants were admitted at UNC last year. Of these, 1160 were OOS. Considering the size of UNC's applicant pool (~6500 OOS applicants), that's an admit rate of 18%- Duke's admit rate was 19%. UNC's average admitted SAT score for OOS was 1435; Duke's middle 50% range hovers around 1370-1560. Obviously these numbers aren't everything, but I'd say the two are comparable in selectivity.

Alot of people apply to UNC from out of state, and since it has a smaller amount of spots available of OOS it makes the acceptance rate low

That being said, UNC's OOS accepted median SAT is 1430, Duke's is 1460, so Duke is slightly harder to get in than OOS UNC - essentially similar

Someone posted a couple revealing links responding to this same original post at the UNC-CH Board. According to these links, the recent years oos acceptance rate at UNC-CH has hovered at about 19% or slightly less and the 2006 acceptance rate for Duke during their most selective year in history was 21%.

I'll admit to being a little biased since my d is one of those oos honors kids at UNC-CH. But only a little since she has three very good friends at Duke. :-) Both are great schools and are extremely selective for oos candidates.
