Classic Situation?

First Post on CC! Hi everyone!

I'm in a sticky situation here:
East Asian Male (owch) slacker (bigger owch) trying to get into a decent science/engineering school with a good pre-med program.

First Post on CC! Hi everyone!

My GPA and class rank is on the lower end but my SAT score is above average for the schools I'm looking at so can someone chance with these stats.?

GPA: ~3.45 upward trend
SAT: ~2100
Class Rank: ~50%. top Public school in my area

Classes:

Mostly Honors/Advanced. Only one AP junior year, I plan to take 3 Sr. year and I'm on a massive upward trend ( ~96% second semester average, but only 87% first semester for junior year so far.)

EC: Wrestling 5 years (3 Varsity)
Volleyball: 2 Years JV
Various religious volunteering for around ~30 hours

Being Eastern Asian male can't help either...

Schools I'm considering:

Carnegie Mellon University (Big Reach?)
Cornell University (Big Reach?)
New York University (Match or slight reach?)
Rensselaer Poly (?)
Binghamton University (Match/Probable)
Stonybrook University (Definitely)
University at Buffalo (Definitely)

Would you guys say my guesses for these schools are fairly accurate or should I lower my reaches down a few notches?

Thanks!

No your SAT is not in the above average range. At least not for Carnegie Mellon and Cornell University.

You have no chance at Cornell and Carnegie Mellon. Class rank is far too low, especially for an Asian applicant.

NYU is a mid-high reach, also because of your class rank.

RPI is a good bet- SAT is high but GPA is pretty low. May get waitlisted.

in at the rest.

Maybe if you get recruited for wrestling?

Cortana

If I get in the mid 90s for first semester of senior year with 3-4 APs, would that greatly benefit my chances of NYU admission?

Also, would you be able to recommend any other science schools with a good pre-med program in the NE/NY zone?

Thanks

Go to UTD pre-med, there is a chance you can get a full ride, plus a stipend depending on SAT

kiddo:

I really want to stay up Northeast for my colleges, but would I have a shot at Rice?

And Cortana, seeing reporting class rank is optional, would it be a good idea to not send that part in? It’s not a requirement and most people with 3.4-3.5 are top 30% of class.

It wouldn’t matter, Carnegie Mellon and Cornell would be able to perceive where you stand in the class either way.

and of course it would! any improvements in your grade can only help you.

And you would have no shot at Rice unfortunately.

This is how they pick students at rice, look at the link, for this did not come out well. Compare yourself to the various criteria

OK thanks for the help so far… So for engineering, what schools in our area would you recommend?

Rensselaer, Purdue, and Penn State seem pretty nice and relatively close to home, what others would be a good match for me?

Also, If things should work out as planned, I should have a ~3.6 gpa which should put me a bit further ahead in class rank.

And studying for my courses would help, I unfortunately decided not to spend more than 20 minutes a day doing schoolwork (including most homework) for the first two and a half years of high school, which explains the poor GPA. But if I fully apply myself next year, I should have a ~93 average with 3-4 APs and I hope that would look really nice first semester.
