Classical Singer for HS Seniors

My D would like to do Classical Singer again this year but being a senior, I'm just wondering if there is any true (possible) financial benefit. You have to make a school commitment prior to the Convention in NYC in late May. ANd summer commitments would also have been arranged - so no scholarships to summer programs that year. It would cost me airline tix, hotel and food. Am I missing something?

My opinion is that it’s far more useful for a junior or sophomore from the financial standpoint. It can be useful for a senior if the audition is early in the year because the format is just like a college audition so it’s an excellent way to prep.

I do know of at least one young man that was offered scholarship and invite to attend a summer program (he was a senior)…that said…if your daughter already has her summer all planned out it probably wouldn’t do her much good…other than something else on her resume which your D doesn’t really need.

My initial thought was that the resume would have served its purpose by that time. I think I’m really just in the “save money” mode.

That’s not a bad mode to be in POTO…there will be little left when you finish with the audition process :} Glad it’s not us this year!

Oh, to be our kids, huh, opera-mom?!

You got it Mezzo…happy as a lark they are! Freshman year is much easier than audition year when my DD cut all her hair off and proclaimed she was going to go to cosmetology school…LOL

As a senior DD did the Classical Singer and was able to do it at one of the schools she was applying to. The same professors that do the entrance auditions were there and they counted it as her audition for the school. It was not on the top of her list, but she was accepted with a nice merit award even though she did not place.

Unfortunately, the two schools that hold Classical Singer have both recruited my D and she is not interested. She auditioned at one in 2008 and the other in 2009. I was thinking if I waited long enough that applications would close and then it wouldn’t be my call. Sneaky huh.
