Classical voice Training in MT Programs

which MT schools have good Classical voice Training as well as well - rounded training?

BW, One of the reasons its a BM in Music Theatre. You're required to have a classical recital your Junior year. Typically half the rep that you work on is classical depending on which teacher you get.

Oklahoma City University

Sporti, ya beat me to it! :)

Oklahoma City University indeed has an excellent classical voice training rep for MT students. All students are taught in this manner and MT students must include classic works, art songs, arias etc in their semester rep. Teachers are very versed in both the MT and Classical worlds. MT majors must perform a reciatal their junior and senior year which includes works from both areas.

The MT students at OCU are expected to be versatile and cross between the MT and Classical fields. This is especially evident in the fact that many MT students are cast in the main stage operas and vica-verse. It certainly makes for a well rounded performer.

The voice training at the University of Michigan is exceptional, for both MT and Classical repertoire. Beginning sophomore year, all MT's have private voice lessons with faculty members of the reknowned UM School of Music. Their private voice lessons freshman year are with Graduate Student Instructors. All voice instruction is rooted in classical vocal technique. As part of the evaluations that sophomore MT's go through at the end of the year, they also have vocal juries where they perform both classical and MT rep. My daughter could not be happier with her vocal training at UM.

I think there are previous threads about this topic.

Bumping this old thread up because I’d be interested to find out if there are other schools out there that we should consider…

BM Music Theatre program at James Madison University in VA. The BM students and the BA Musical Theatre students are integrated in acting, dance, and musical theatre performance classes, but while the BA Musical Theatre students are pursuing a more well rounded program in acting, music, voice, musical theatre performance, dance, and theatre, the BM Music Theatre students course work is heavily weighted towards musicianship and voice.

Thanks, Kat. JMU is already at the top of our list, as we are Virginia residents and are well aware of the very high quality of the program(s) there. Our son is definitely applying there-- just hoping his academics are good enough to get him an invitation to audition… It’s been a struggle! (sigh) He’s been chosen by his HS to audition in January for the VA Gov School summer vocal program at Radford. He loves classical vocal music, but also enjoys the variety that MT offers.

Here are some more that you may want to look at:

Arizona State University - MT is integrated with Lyric Opera

New York University: Steinhardt

Wichita State

Belmont - MT is part of the music department, which has a very broad vocal performance program

Florida State - has a BM MT program which functions side-by-side with their BFA MT program

University of Central Oklahoma

Sam Houston State

Elon students study both classical repertoire in multiple languages and MT every semester. Their semester end juries include both.

He may want to consider auditioning for both the BA and BM programs at JMU. Students in the BA program also study classical repertory in their voice lessons (although not as much required), and can audition for and participate in operas, choirs… as well as plays, and musicals (of course). There is the opportunity for quite a bit of crossover dependent upon a students interests and goals. Feel free to PM me. :-)

Plymouth State University in NH is another program that allows students to study both MT and classical rep., and audition for musicals, opera, choirs, and plays.

This is one of the questions we will be asking when we visit Shenandoah tomorrow. They have a great vocal performance program but I don’t know if the acting and MT students have access.

SUNY Fredonia students study classical music for the first two years of the program in addition to Musical Theatre rep. We also take English, Italian, French, and German diction and are required to submit classical pieces for our juries until Junior year.

NYU Steinhardt!!! We are a BM program as well- the official “major” is a BM in Vocal Performance with a concentration in either Music Theater or Classical Voice. The MT and Classical students take all of the same classes for the first two years, and all of the voice teachers are AMAZING and teach both MT and classical. MTs are expected to sing classical rep, especially since we all take 4 semesters of singing diction in English, Italian, German, and French. MT majors are also required to have a classical set in our senior recitals. All of the voice training here is done from the viewpoint of healthy and efficient voice production, whether the style be MT or Classical- If you have any other questions let me know!!
