Any prospective classics majors out there?

Tell us why you like classics, what you're planning to do with a degree - if anything, and what schools you want to attend! Also, how do you deal with the strange looks you get from people who are majoring in something more marketable - or worse, their parents.

I’m a prospective classics major, for class of 2014!

I just love Classical literature I guess. I do Latin A Level so we do a lot of in-depth translating and reading; Ovid, Cicero, Tacitus etc. It’s like a combination of the subjects I love - literature and history. What do I plan to with my degree? Erm…good question. I’d quite like to do a law degree as a graduate student. But I haven’t made up my mind yet!

As for the strange looks…I don’t really get them! Maybe over here in the UK, people are more open to pursuing obscure/less “marketable” degrees…? I don’t know…

I’ve noticed that my friends are usually really open to it when I tell them what I’m pursuing, but I have gotten the usual “what are you going to do with THAT?” From friends and family.

I never really considered law school, I guess I’m not that much of a budding Cicero :P

Anyone else?

I’ve already earned my BA in classics, but I suppose I count.

I find Greek culture fascinating, so obviously it was a good fit. I’m currently in grad school aiming for a tenure-track job teaching classics…we’ll see how that dream works out. I’ve come to terms with the horrendous job market for classics PhDs.

My parents have been surprisingly supportive. Being fully funded helps with that, I suppose.

2014 prospective classics major here
Could you tell by my name? :P

“Tell us why you like classics”
I’ve just always loved ancient history esp Roman. Latin came pretty easily after learning Spanish in elementary school

“what you’re planning to do with a degree - if anything”
not sure yet… archaeology, law, teaching, or the navy

“what schools you want to attend!”
I’m in at umich which is awesome because it has such a great department. Applied to uva and william and mary too.

“how do you deal with the strange looks you get from people who are majoring in something more marketable - or worse, their parents”
My parents are really supportive and my friends all pretty much expected to hear that I was considering the Classics haha
I’ve gotten used to the strange looks from everyone else!
