I do not meet the eligibility requirements because I have half a year of art instead of a full year. Can I be eligible by "examination" alone, or must I meet both requirements?

a-g is required i think.. you really need a full year.

You require a full year unless you take the course at a community college, CSU, UC (while you're in high school) or if your high school goes through a semester schedule. I believe 1 semester of a community college art or music course could count for the requirement (doubel check with the UCs).

Also, with the community college course, you don't have to put it in your high school transcript, which lifts up your class rank and GPA. Colleges usually consider it separate from your high school transcripts and they will see your rank without a high school art class, which could lower your high school GPA.

One semester at the CC counts for one year of A-G for the UC's. Even if it is not included in your HS transcript/gpa, the UC's will give you an extra grade point for it. And there is some point in the process where your gpa can be looked at uncapped for admissions purposes if I am not mistaken. Just go sign up for the history of rock and roll or something... easy classes are usually available online as well.

haha, how long would it take to complete it

So Art History counts at a CC? What about online courses?

No, you can be eligible through examination alone, which would mean you are guaranteed acceptance to Merced and Riverside. Berkeley may overlook your deficiency in art if you're outstanding otherwise (as they still read the applications of everybody who is eligible, regardless of how they are so), but I wouldn't take the risk and I'd do a art course at a CC for first semester.

Take the art class at the CC. Call the UC campus you wish to attend (Cal) and ask them what will count. Do not rely on your HS guidance as they obviously did not advise you well enough for you to finish your a-g requirements at the HS. The admissions people at Cal are very nice once you can get them on the phone. Very helpful.

I am out of state, so the A-G deal was different...

The art I have in high school is one Theater class, and then two classes of cooking.
