Clearly I Will Chance You Back (Columbia ED)

Standard issue chance thread -- WILL CHANCE YOU BACK IF YOU LEAVE A LINK!

Schools:

Columbia (ED, already submitted)
Wharton
Yale
Brown
Cornell
Rice
Stanford
Duke
Wash U
Case Western
RIT

Really interested in the cutting edge programs that most of these schools are coming out with. It is a combination of finance, economics, applied math, and computer science. Princeton calls it "Financial Engineering" - though I am not applying to Princeton, I like their name for it.

SAT II (800 Math I and II, 790 Chem, 770 USH)

Co-Senior Editor of award winning literary magazine
Individual neuroscience research is going to be published! (graduate student advisor -- wrote glowing rec)
Developing Stock-Chart Analysis Software (i don't know if this is interesting or should be included but it has been a major time commitment my Columbia Essay was about this software but I didn't include it as part of my "resume")
Taught intro to photography class to 20 young kids (summer)

Other (in order of importance to me):

Math Competitions (AMC/AIME/ARML/NYCIML/School Math Team)
Photography (Competitions [library, county fair, scholastic], contributing photographer [literary magazine, yearbook], volunteering)
Mock Trial Team

Summer:
JHU CTY
Internship at local business (designed and built website)
Volunteering at church, local organization which promotes the arts in underprivileged areas
College classes (3 total)
Research at local university under a grad student

In summary, my passions are the stock market, math, and photography -- whether my activities reflect this is debatable. All input is extremely valuable, I know that the schools that I am applying to are all crapshoots, but it would be nice to know if you think I have a realistic chance -- is what I bring to the table what they are looking for. It is always hard to evaluate yourself, so your opinion is very valuable to me. Thanks.

Your credentials are really good, especially if you plan on focusing in more math/science/economic fields. I think you should definitely tell colleges about the analysis software: that is a big accomplishment that very few students have done. I don’t know if it would fit in your Extracurricular section as much as your additional info, but you can decide that. I think you’re pretty much a sure shot at everywhere on your list except Columbia, Wharton and Yale (and that is simply because they are, as you said, crapshoots). I’m not sure about Brown because they are historically more inclined towards the liberal arts, but I think you’re a somewhat likely there. Best of luck!

I’d take the SAT again just for the superscore and getting over 2300, which I’m certain you can do. Your ECs are strong, but not amazing. I’d definitely mention the stock market stuff on your resume.

Columbia (ED) - Reach, but they have good early acceptance rates
Wharton - Reach
Yale - High reach (Well, for anyone)
Brown - Low - Medium Reach (Liberal arts concentration, but you have the stats)
Cornell - High Match
Rice - Match
Stanford - High reach (True for anyone)
Duke - Reach
Wash U - High match
Case Western - Unsure
RIT - Safety

“Individual neuroscience research is going to be published! (graduate student advisor – wrote glowing rec)”

Send me a message with more details ^^ and I’ll tell you whether of not I believe you will get in the Ivy league schools.

Um, is this really the type who I’m competing against for Columbia next year?

Yeah, it’s pretty safe to say you’re definitely getting into at least one of the super-duper-competitive schools you’ve applied to. It’s kinda hard to predict, obviously, considering there isn’t really any real matches for, say, Stanford. But great academics and ECs. It’s clear you have a big passion in the stuff you occupy your time with, which is the biggest thing they’re looking for.

Thanks for the chance
I really hope you get into Columbia because yours is one of the best all-around profiles I’ve seen on this site. IMO you should get into at least 4/5 of the first 9 schools on your list. Good luck!

stanford wharton only reaches imo

http://talk.collegeconfidential.com/what-my-chances/1022392-chance-me-stanford-ea-one-last-time.html</a></p>

wharton is only reach. chance me back http://talk.collegeconfidential.com/what-my-chances/1025362-chances-texas-m-minnesota-etc.html</a></p>

I feel they are all about reaches for you(your perceived top choices ala IVYs). All of those top notch schools have low acceptance rates of similar proportions. That said, if you even have a 20% chance at those 8 or nine schools, youre bound to get into at least one or two, that is my honest view on your case.

http://talk.collegeconfidential.com/what-my-chances/1025626-help-forum-buddy-out-his-chances-mixture-dream-schools-targets.html</a></p>

You will definitely be accepted into all of the schools you mentioned that are not ivys. But you will probably be accepted into one or more ivys. You have amazing stats and EC’s. Keep it up. Good luck!

Your scores (especially math) are perfect (literally) for your prospective major. Very “Whartony” scores. Your ECs seem solid. Famn everything is solid! I think you’ll get into At least one or two of your reach schools (Wharton, columbia, Stanford, yale

Famn i’m jealous of your math scores! Haha

Please chance back (also aiming for Wharton as you might notice :P)
http://talk.collegeconfidential.com/what-my-chances/1023241-chance-hot-swede-wharton-other-b-schools-2.html#post1065831695</a></p>

Columbia (ED, already submitted)- reach but their early chances are good
Wharton-high reach
Yale-high reach
Brown- match-low reach
Cornell-reach
Rice- match
Stanford- high reach
Duke- reach
Wash U- not sure
Case Western- match
RIT- match/safety

http://talk.collegeconfidential.com/what-my-chances/1025831-chance-me-please-ill-chance-back-thanks-guys.html</a></p>

I take everything with a grain of salt but Case Western as a match? Geez you’re tough. Their acceptance rate is 70%

bump :frowning: any other opinions?

LatinOpitimist are you ■■■■■■■■? You have a great shot at all of the schools you listed.

Some crazy thinking on this thread. Anyone cover probability in any math class? A 20% chance at each does not mean you’ll get into one when all use pretty much the same metrics.

Ivies as matches?

OP, you have nice stats, you’re in the running. My DS has considerably higher scores and is val of his class with strong ECs. A review of Naviance data has shown us that without a hook, the top ivies are major reaches for all, and the lower ivies, save some schools at Cornell, are under 50/50 for even the best student if you have not applied ED.

So throw your hat in the ring, apply to some schools you know you can get into and love, and hope for the best!

In at last 3 you mentioned, in at cornell/duke imo, low reaches at stan/brown, great shot at Columbia :), good shot at other ivies but they are crapshoots.

http://talk.collegeconfidential.com/what-my-chances/1022659-you-know-you-want-chance-me-chance-back-well-3.html#post1065838130</a></p>

Personally I think you have a good shot at columbia… low reach to high match! HYPS are of course are crapshoots as always at low to regular reaches… case western is a clear match to high match… RIT is a match…

Good Luck!

Please chance back at:
http://talk.collegeconfidential.com/what-my-chances/1025684-chance-cute-asian-amazing-schools-one-last-time-promise-chance-back-2.html</a></p>

=P

You are a very, very strong applicant. Your grades and test scores are good, and your EC’s look great. I’d say you are in everywhere except Stanford, Wharton, Brown, and Columbia ED. Those schools are kind of a reach for nearly everyone, but I fully expect you to get into at least one of them, if not two or three.

http://talk.collegeconfidential.com/what-my-chances/1023301-chance-me-pomona-usc-cmc-amherst-stanford-wash-u-u-c-ill-chance-back.html</a></p>

Chance me?
