I am an incoming freshman and I am trying to decide between the CLEG and the Political Science majors. What are the pros and cons of each? What are some good/bad experiences that you have had with either?

I don’t have the answers to your questions, but before you have to commit to one or the other major you’ll have ample opportunity and time to explore classes and professors in both majors and talk to students in both, and that input will be much more valuable than what you may or may not get here.

I’m not either of those majors so I’m not going to comment based on experience, but you should recognize that CLEG is an interdisciplinary major only offered at AU. Thus, when you apply for internships or jobs in the future it won’t be readily recognizable. Some students love the interdisciplinary aspect of taking classes in all 4 fields of CLEG but some also dislike having to explain their major every time they are asked about it. On the other hand, Political Science is a major that is readily recognized no matter where you go.

I advise you take your time in choosing your major like MommaJ said. However, look on AU’s website for both majors and what types of classes you have to take. After you look at the types of courses and see how the major feels like, you will likely have a better grasp of which major you’re leaning towards.

Another consideration would be to double major. My daughter started in Political Science, and added CLEG to have both. She started in 2010, requirements may have changed since that time, but for her, as many of her courses counted towards both CLEG and Political Science, it was worth the extra effort. While CLEG is only available at AU, it also is much more broad as far as application for post-graduate work or employment, as opposed to Political Science, IMHO. Her counselor was a great help in making this happen. Best of luck to you.
