Clemson and AP tests

I took three AP tests last spring. Two of the scores were really poor, a one and a two. The third test has still not been scored yet, although I doubt it will be much better. Everything else on my app looks really good. Will my poor AP scores impact my chance of being admitted?

AP Scores have absolutely zero impact on whether you get admitted or not. Just make sure you do really well on the ACT/SAT

I scored in the low 30’s for the ACT. Not quite as good on the SAT, but still respectable. I am from out-of-state, so will that make a difference?

Now I am trying to fill out the Clemson app. When it asks you to declare a major, how should you approach that? I’m almost sure I want to major in Business, although I have not determined exacatly which area of business. If I make a choice, will they hold me to it? Will I be able to change majors easily? What happens if I don’t make a choice at all?

I have scoured the Clemson website trying to find answers to these questions, but I can’t seem to find anything…

If I were you, I would just send your ACT score in that case. Both tests are better so just send the one that represents yourself in the best light.

It is possible to change majors and it shouldn’t be hard at all for something like business. If you don’t make a choice of major, you’ll simply be admitted to Clemson as an undeclared student.

Pierre, I’m trying to schedule a visit to Clemson during October. Do you have any specific hotels you would recommend? I’d like something close to the university, reasonably priced, and of course safe. I’m assuming it would be better to skip a home football weekend since the hotels will probably be filled then. Also, any suggestions on which airport to use?

Greenville-Spartanburg Airport is the closest airport to Clemson (about an hour away from Clemson). Are you planning on renting a car or taking the shuttle service from the airport? (the two main services are Airport Shuttle of Clemson 800-669-6463 and Anderson-Clemson Shuttle Services 888-732-5550).

As for hotels, the university has a hotel, the James F. Martin Inn ([The James F. Martin Inn : Clemson University](http://www.clemson.edu/centers-institutes/madren/inn/)) but if you don’t have a car I wouldn’t recommend it since there are no sidewalks on the road to campus and the bus doesn’t (for some reason) go on that side of campus. Other hotels that I would recommend is the Courtyard Marriott ([Courtyard Clemson: Clemson Business Hotels](http://www.marriott.com/hotels/travel/gspcl-courtyard-clemson/)), Holiday Inn Express ([CLEMSON Hotels - Holiday Inn Express Hotels CLEMSON - UNIV AREA Hotel in CLEMSON | Best Price Guarantee or First Night Free](http://www.hiexpress.com/hotels/us/en/clemson/ceupd/hoteldetail)), Hampton Inn ([official site hampton.com - hampton inn/hampton inn and suites](http://hamptoninn1.hilton.com/en_US/hp/index.do)) or Sleep Inn ([Clemson hotels, Sleep Inn hotel in Clemson SC, Clemson University hotels](http://www.sleepinn.com/hotel-clemson-south_carolina-SC047))

Stay away from the Days Inn, Comfort Inn or Ramada Inn unless you really are looking for the lowest price possible. Again, I can probably tell you a little bit more about what hotel is best if I know whether you will have a car or not

We will definitely have a rental car. How big is the Greenville airport? And thanks for all your help!

I hope you don’t mind me jumping in to your conversation with Pierre. I just wanted to let you know that it’s definitely better to declare a major, even if you may change later. My son is a student at Clemson, and he was admitted undeclared, but they later told us that they admit very few students that way and prefer that students declare a major. I also wanted to tell you that the Greenville airport is a dream to get through, and it’s very easy to get to Clemson from there.
As far as good hotels, we have flown down several times and stayed in various hotels, but by far our favorite is the Hilton Garden Inn in Anderson, just 11 miles from Campus. We have also stayed at the Holiday Inn Express right in Clemson, which was fine, and very convenient.

No problem jumping in! Luckily I put down Pre-Business as my first pref for a major. Undeclared was my second choice though. So how does your son like Clemson? Any places I should definitely check out while I am there? Restaurant suggestions?

My son is a sophomore, and he loves it there. I think he found it a very warm and welcoming place. He has made some great friends, who are from both SC and out of state. We are from the Northeast, so I think it was a bit of adjustment being so far away from home, and not coming home until Christmas break. His classes are challenging but he enjoys most of them, and there always seems to be something for him to do.
There is a nice little pasta place in downtown I think it’s called Brioso. And if you’re looking to visit in October, definitely the hotels will be filled on home football weekends.

good places to eat: Brioso is nice, The Smoking Pig and Just More Barbeque have really good BBQ in Pendleton, Monterrey’s/El Jimedors/Vaqueros has good mexican The Esso Club and Mac’s Drive In are Clemson traditions.

I went to Clemson this past week. I took the tour and was very impressed, but I was concerned that they didn’t actually show me a sample dorm room. I’ve never been on a tour where they didn’t do that. So now I am starting to wonder if they were trying to hide something. Can anyone describe the dorm conditions and options?

Also, they didn’t show us the main athletic facility either, but I think that was just cuz it is out of the way. Comments on that would be appreciated too. Thanks!

wait really?? Who was your tour guide? I’ll get on them about that if I know them haha
There’s a room in Manning Hall that is solely used as a “demo” room to show to prospective students so I’m shocked that they didn’t show you at least that. I’ll ask them about that and hopefully I’ll have an answer for you.

Here are the descriptions of the housing facilities (have pictures and for some a panoramic 360 degree view): [Residence Halls : Clemson University](http://www.clemson.edu/campus-life/housing/living-options/residence-halls/index.html)
Freshman live in the Bryan Mall dorms, Clemson House, Johnstone Main & Annex, and The Shoeboxes. Clemson House dorms are very nice, the rest are average regular dorm rooms. The conditions of the dorm rooms are not bad but not luxury living of course. There’s nothing to hide as far as I’m concerned and I’ve been living on campus for 3 years now.

The athletic facilities are on the other side of campus and out of the way for the main campus tour so that’s why they were not shown on the tour.
Here’s info on the student recreation center (it’s pretty cool though the pool is currently under renovation): [Our Facilities : Clemson University/url

As for the NCAA Division 1 facilities, here are some 360 degree views of the facilities: [url=<a href=“http://www.clemsontigers.com/ot/clemson360/index.html]Clemson360”>http://www.clemsontigers.com/ot/clemson360/index.html]Clemson360 Virtual Tours](<a href=“Campus Recreation | Division of Student Affairs, Clemson University, South Carolina”>Campus Recreation | Division of Student Affairs, Clemson University, South Carolina)

Hope that helps!

Pierre, I cannot tell you how much better I feel after hearing from you. You see, I went to Furman on the same trip and they showed us a freshman dorm which was absolutely the worst I had EVER seen. I know dorms aren’t luxurious whatsoever, but that one was like a dungeon! Anyway, it got me to wondering if Clemson was trying to hide something when they didn’t show me a dorm room. To me it seems like the ones in Clemson house are the best available to freshman. Would you agree? I like the suite style type of dorm the best and I guess that is why.

What about the dining halls? Are you restricted to eating in the one dining hall in your dorm area, or are you allowed to go to the others if they are more convenient for you? Do they all offer the same food selections or not?

Thanks again!

Oh yeah I agree that by far Clemson House is the best freshman housing option. It used to be upperclassmen housing but they ran out of spots for freshman so they converted that to freshman housing.

You are not restricted to eating at one dining hall. There are 3 dining halls on campus: Clemson House, Harcombe and Schilletter and you can eat at any of them as long as you have meals! Harcombe is the biggest dining hall and Clemson House is tiny (but is very convenient since if you live there it’s right on the ground floor). The food selections are different at each dining hall (other than stuff that is offered at every meal like burgers, pizza, salad etc… lol)

They have menus and info on campus dining here: http://www.campusdish.com/en-US/CSSE/Clemson</a></p>
