Clemson and Virginia Tech

My son has narrowed his top two schools to VT and Clemson, majoring in engineering of some sort. He is a good student, but fairly laid back. Enjoys sports (playing and watching) and is not into drinking or partying. He is OOS for both (from MA). We visited both last spring and he seemed to like VT a little better. Looking for feedback on the two schools, academic, social, etc. I am posting this on both VT and Clemson CC boards.

I had to make the same decision between Clemson and Vt for civil engineering. I’m from Belmont, MA, not really into drinking/partying either and I love sports. I will say that VT is ranked better for in engineering but if you look at the curriculum, you pretty much learn the same stuff, there are research opportunities at both schools (Clemson has a program called creative inquiry that allows research opportunities for undergraduates) and there are numerous companies recruiting at Clemson along with tons of internship opportunities in civil engineering. The professors I’ve had at Clemson have been fantastic and from what I’ve heard from other schools, I’d say that they care a lot more about their undergraduates as opposed to their research. So I would say that the academic difference is probably less than the rankings would have you believe. Socially, there are tons of organizations on campus to get involved in and I have met my best friends from there. The school spirit at Clemson is definitely the best among any of the ACC schools, every Friday is “Solid Orange Friday” where most people wear orange.

I’m not sure what else you would like to hear about Clemson but if there’s something else - let me know!!
