Clemson, Auburn, UTK, Vanderbilt, or UF?

I’m a junior in high school from Missouri and am looking to go southeast for college. I have family in Tennessee and Alabama & love the southern weather and friendly people. This past fall I visited Clemson, Auburn, and UTK & fell in love with both Auburn and Clemson. My brother is attending UTK this fall since it’s his dream school and we have cousins there, but I don’t think it’s really for me. I plan to go into either electrical or computer engineering. I have a 4.0 unweighted gpa, 33 ACT, and am in the top 10% of my class. I’m visiting Vanderbilt, UF, FSU, and Clemson & Auburn again over spring break to really get a feel for all of the schools. I was wondering which would be a better fit for me, which would be a better value/cost, and which has the best engineering? If it helps, I’m a white female who’s also a very conservative republican lol. I just want to find a school that fits my personality & where I will have fun these next few years of my life. Comments from current students at any of these schools would be much appreciated!!

You will find that most students in engineering (and business) tend toward the conservative side. The best engineering school in the SE is Georgia Tech (somewhat conservative), followed by Rice (mixed) UT-Austin (liberal) and Texas A&M (very conservative). With your stats you could get a mostly full tuition scholarship to Alabama too. Vanderbilt (mixed) offers the highest FA if your parents are middle class. I’d visit those as well and see what you think.

Staying in the SouthEast and working with your list.

Auburn and Clemson are both very good engineering schools, that will offer OOS merit scholarships. Auburn will offer more, while Clemson is a bit better ranked.

Vanderbilt is a very good school that offers a solid FA package that will NOT include loans. Run the net price calculator to get a sense of your cost. It’s more competitive than most on your list, and though they will meet “need”, it may also be one of the more expensive (but still cheaper than GT or UF at full OOS tuition rates, based on your family income).

You should look into GT, it’s a great school, but they are very competitive (for OOS) and don’t offer much in financial aid (to OOS). For engineering, GT is by far the best “recruited” school in this list, followed by UF…

UF is a great school (of course!) with a very strong computer engineering program. Intel is on of UF’s top employers (for 2014-15 it was 5th behind companies like Deloitte, PwC, EY and ExxonMobil), which is impressive at a school that graduates over 8,500+ undergrads a year. However, they only offer $8K to $20K a year in OOS scholarships. You may need the $16K or $20K scholarship to find UF affordable. Your stats would make you competitive for an OOS scholarship.

FSU/FAMU has the weakest engineering program of those schools you’ve listed. However, they are good about offering OOS tuition waivers (the in-state tuition rate is about $6K a year).

Good Luck!
