Creating a place to discuss dorm options for 2024
@86grad and @HokieCrazy @130happymom figured I’d move this so I don’t hijack the other thread.
Good idea. I think anyone who is in a STEM major needs to look at the RISE program. Some links are in the Honors thread or you can google it.
As I posted, my son had more interest in RISE than Honors, although the early scheduling is a nice perk for Honors.
We never got a straight answer as to which is best for STEM so he was still not 100% sure until he got declined Honors. Made his choice easy.
My biggest concern was more the social aspect than academic side. I wanted him in a dorm where it was easy to make friends with similar people.
Thanks for creating this thread! My daughter was weighing CH vs CUBS and along with some impressive kids from her in-state hs, she was rejected from CH. We toured CUBS at the Junior Blitz last year and with the new beautiful building and LLC specific opportunities-it’s a win-win?
My D still waiting on other college decisions so she hasn’t 100% decided on Clemson yet and hasn’t looked into dorms. She’s an engineering major and RISE is a great option of course but are their other dorms that are more quiet but still social too and ok for an engineering major?
Any of the dorms that aren’t restricted are fine for an engineering major. To be in RISE you have to live in a RISE dorm of course.
If she decides to come to Clemson, she just needs to look around and she what fits her best. Obviously, the newer, nicer dorms are the most expensive but whether that is the best fit for you and your daughter is for you to decide.
Anyone with experience would love thoughts on living in Honors, CUBS or RISE. Benefits/negatives of each? Thank you!
CUBS and RISE are major restricted so your child would only be eligible for one unless you have two going. What major?
Business Honors
Your child would not be eligible for RISE. The good thing if dorms are important and price isn’t, CUBS is in the nicest and most expensive dorm and Honors in second nicest. It really comes down to which group your child would be most comfortable with. Of course Honors has the advantage of early registration too.
Do you mean Calhoun Honors? I never heard of business honors
She was answering my question. I assumed business major accepted to Honors college.
Yes - he is a business major and accepted to Calhoun
What are the best dorms available to incoming Freshmen in the fall and how is it determined who gets first choice, second choice, etc for housing? Does that depend on your acceptance date like I’ve seen at other schools? thanks!
It depends on your application date and/or specific program you are in (honors, rise etc)
@gone2mrrw is correct about priority. As to the best dorm, it depends on what you are looking for. Nicest is probably Douthit Hills. It is also most expensive. Next is probably Core. But certain groups live in certain areas. RISE lives in the high rises. Honors has its own dorm, etc.
@rghaze There isn’t a “best” dorm at Clemson. Each one is different and they all have pros and cons. It really depends on your student’s desires and your budget (they differ VASTLY in cost). The whole campus is walkable so location is simply a preference issue. The best advice is to read about all the housing on the website and see what suits your student the best.
If you join Clemson University Parents on Facebook there are albums for different dorms and you can search old posts related to housing. Clemson housing has Flickr albums as well. There are pros and cons to every dorm. Even the older ones are convenient and have a great sense of community.
Thanks all for the answers on the “best” dorm question…greatly appreciated!
@HokieCrazy I received the amount of financial aid that I expected, but Clemson is still quite expensive compared to other schools I have been accepted into. Still waiting on UVA and Tech, but if I do end up accepting the Clemson offer, I think I’ll be applying for RISE housing.
