Clemson Engineering
My daughter has been accepted. Clemson Engineering graduates - Any comments on academic support available? Career Services? Job placement? Overall experience? Any negatives? Any insight would be appreciated.
D20 is a current MechE student; let me know if I can answer any questions.
My daughter is accepted and deciding between Purdue and Clemson. Leaning ME but as you know both have a general first year. Purdue seems more well regarded as an Engineering college and also seems to be a bit more intense. Clemson seems to have nicer campus, definitely has better weather, and population is about half the size of Purdue. Both are OOS for us. Clemson is more expensive but fortunately we can deal with the cost of either.
Really just trying to figure out which is a better fit for her.
There are a lot of Purdue engineers out there that love Purdue and advocate for the program.
Just looking for insight on Clemson.
Level of academic support? Does your daughter love it there? How rigorous is the engineering program? Did your daughter find friends easily?
My daughter is not a party person so she is looking for entertainment outside of that.
Any info would be helpful.
Thank you!
My dad is a Purdue engineer, so it holds a special place for me. D20 loves it at Clemson; she liked the smaller, self-contained campus away from a big city, the top rated career center and the acadademic support services. They have a peer program that will match you with any upperclassman who will attend class with you if you’re struggling and then go over material with you afterwards (not sure how this is running during covid). The programs at Purdue and Clemson are both ABET accredited, so the curriculums are similar. Not going to lie; it isn’t easy. Many drop out of engineering after freshman year, but this is the case at most engineering programs. I read alot of “my kid was a straight A student in HS.” I think many kids make the mistake of thinking Clemson will be an easier program. There are a lot of academic supports, but the student needs to take the initiative. D20 chose the stem llc over honors housing because they offered small class sizes in the dorm and had tutoring Sunday through Thursday evening. She is not a partier, so she does a lot of activities on campus. She spends a lot of time at the Maker space using the 3D printers and has met most of her friends in non academic clubs. She enjoys going to the occasional football game, but isn’t a big sports fan. She’s an unapologetic geek. Purdue obviously has a great program and reputation; has she visited both campuses?
Thank you so much! This is very helpful!
Agreed, after researching - any engineering program is going to be difficult. In fact many say just go to an ABET accredited undergrad. You will find jobs, save your money for grad school, etc. I have already had multiple talks with her about lowering her grade expectations and that C’s are fine. Our group rally cry my senior year of college was D = Diploma
We affectionately call my daughter “our little nerd”. Socially sounds just like your daughter.
Has a love for Art and Music as well.
Visiting Purdue this weekend.
Clemson March 11th
I am sure the visits will provide clarity for her. Wr just want her to wind up where she will be happy.
