Anyone have a good feel for the Graphics Communications program at Clemson? We just toured and the program seems rather unique. I wondered how much actual Graphic Design (and art-focus) there is in the program. Sounds like you design and then apply those designs to different print making technologies so it’s a two fold learning process. As well they seem to include video, web and social media. I appreciated the business aspect and being housed within business school (also unique). On the same note… is that a popular major given the competitiveness of the admissions process relative to majors? And for anyone else still reading… are both Health Science and Pre Med hard to get into at Clemson (asking for a friend)?
My OOS freshman daughter is a GC major. She looked at programs at some great schools but there was NOTHING that compared to Clemson’s program for the reasons you stated. In fact, my daughter led her HS Graphic Design class/club on a “field trip” to the SGIA Convention in Las Vegas (we live in CT) and there were 2 schools that had exhibits there ---- one was NC State, the other was Clemson. The fact that the GC major is within the school of Business is very unique and their equipment is amazing. It’s a BS degree versus a BA or even BFA as you see at most schools. My daughter was drooling over some of the screen presses she saw there when she toured with the Dept.Chair! Anyway, the GC major does often close out (limited admission), as it did this past year. But, my daughter said that there seems to be a fair number of students that transfer in from other majors so it may not be terribly hard to get in if you aren’t admitted to Clemson under the GC major.
@imstacey thank you. I wonder if the Spring Blitz day open house day for juniors Business college presentation will cover any of the Graphic comm major or maybe ask her if she know if Graphic Comm willl have a booth at the expo. We might go back in warmer weather to that event and to have more time on campus than we did on the tour. We are OOS in VA and she has been on yearbook staff and enjoys the graphics element.
@katcap I will ask her about Spring Blitz. But, from what I perceived at summer orientation session, the GC major, while part of the Business School, is really it’s own separate thing. Hard to explain. Amanda Menefee is the staff member in the GC department your daughter should connect with. She serves as the academic advisor for the GC students. https://www.clemson.edu/business/about/profiles/menefee
yes I gathered it’s probably it’s only separate animal. Thanks for your help.
@katcap I can’t speak to GC or Biology, but my daughter started out as pre-med. I’m not sure if it has changed at all, but students are not “accepted” into pre-med. They just declare that they are pre-med alongside whatever major they choose to study. Being pre-med just means they also need to complete the pre-requisites for med school admission alongside major requirements, which means lots of extra Science, etc. That is why many pre-med students choose Biology because many of those pre-reqs are already built into their regular major. My daughter decided to do Psychology because it was a very flexible major with lots of electives, which allowed her to plug in those prereqs there. I don’t know if anything has changed since then, but my advice is to have them look at majors that will compliment pre-med prereqs, and go that route (many do biology, but many also do psychology, philosophy, etc to distinguish themselves from the pack when they apply to med school, as a good chunk of med school applicants are biology). So pre-med is not competitive because it is not an official “major” :). Psychology and Philosophy are not competitive majors. I think Biology is, but not as competitive as nursing or sports comm.
