@3mooregirls Would you feel comfortable sharing your daughter’s GPA?
I’m wondering if the @3mooregirls award is 7500 per semester.
Or maybe they need to check to make sure the DD’s ACT 33 was sent. Maybe Clemson only received a lower earlier score???
@NJEngineer3 how was your DD’s award worded? Per semester? Per year?
@Mom2aphysicsgeek It is worded per year. S got the same $7,500 per year for a potential total of $30,000.
Ok…thanks…so maybe the higher amounts given for the same stats are targeted towards certain students…maybe URMs or female eng’g.
It was per year.
In her high school they don’t use a 4.0 scale, but it’s a 95. @NJEngineer3 thank you for letting me know. Did your child interview? My daughter didn’t but we noticed after it was too late that an interview is preferred. Anyone have any suggestions who to contact? I know it’s a long shot, I’m just frustrated.
Where did you see that interviews were preferred @3mooregirls ? In the recent past( last year) scholarships were based on rank, GPA, rigor and test scores.
@carolinamom2boys I saw it on Naviance
@NJEngineer3 btw we are also from NJ, making this even more upsetting
@3mooregirls That not accurate information . Best to rely on information from the school. While your school may not rank, your GC will send a school report regarding the rigor of your daughter’s program. It may have been different from @NJEngineer3 's program.
I don’t think interviews are expected. Never heard of that. My son didn’t interview, but that was a few years ago.
@3mooregirls what did your DD put down for her major?
NJ’s DD put down an eng’g major, although changing to CS…which is probably looked at as the same. Some schools are more generous to females for eng’g/CS.
As to who to contact…
Contact the director of scholarships. Include a mention of the stats. Politely ask to be reconsidered. Politely mention that this is your DD’s #1 choice, but it’s not affordable. Mention that if she were to get the $15k per year, she would enroll (only say that if true!!!).
Be prepared to enroll if they do the work and give you the $15k/yr.
She applied undecided, but wants to major in public health. She’s taken 5 AP’s, the rest honors, was class president for 3 years, lots of EC’s, has worked since she turned 16, etc.
ECs are not considered. Rank , rigor, GPA and stats.
@carolinamom2boys, I believe the rigor is there. Thanks so much to all for your insight! Keep it coming if you have anything to add.
Without knowing the rigor of other applicants , it is difficult to assess how she compares.
Agreed @carolinamom2boys! I just know that for what was offered in her school, she had an extremely rigorous course load.
@3mooregirls–no interview is needed. At least none was requested for my daughter.
I agree that EC’s don’t matter. Clemson and other similar schools are buying top stats students and sometimes a particular major is needed as well.
No harm in contacting the head of scholarships, who may or may not be in admissions. Make sure that DD’s highest test score was sent. (Check to make sure)
I’m assuming that the ACT 33 is from a single sitting and not a superscore, correct?
Is it possible that she scored the 33 after she applied/was admitted? A few schools won’t accept higher scores later.
What did the NPC say for merit? I questioned D’s merit award based on the NPC, and it turns out the admissions office was using the original ACT, and not either of the two re-takes. Big difference. A lot of this was because they had two admissions folders for her, and that caused even more errors in the admissions office. Didn’t figure this out until the end of first semester.
