I am not a resident of South Carolina (rather Kentucky) but I am interested in these two schools, as they have pretty good reputations. However, due to financial situations and my unwillingness to place many OOS state schools on my list, I must get rid of one. For someone who plans to teach history, which would you recommend?

I am also interested in the following subjects:
Political Science
International Relations
French, or German
English/Creative Writing

Thanks.

P.S. I am of the more liberal persuasion, if that matters.

if you want to study the liberal arts fields itself, then South Carolina would be the better school.

However, if you want to be a history teacher, Clemson has (in my opinion) the better education program so you would go to Clemson for the education program but go to USC for the liberal arts programs.

You may want to consider College of Charleston, too. It’s South Carolina’s liberal arts college, probably has a more liberal (at least, less conventional) student population than Clemson or USC. It also depends if college football is important to you, as CofC does not have a football team. From your list of interests, my guess is that Cof C would be a better match than Clemson.

If financial needs are a consideration, I think USC is more well known for their OOS scholarships than Clemson. S1 was offered a nice OOS merit scholarship when he applied to USC a few years ago. He did not apply to Clemson so don’t know if he would have been offered the same $$ there or not.

Keep in mind if you receive a scholarship from SC, you automatically get in-state tuition. Clemson is more known for engineering and agricultural-related fields, whereas SC is known for liberal arts, business, etc.

Our D was looking at both. While Clemson is known more for science and engineering, I believe that they are known to have an excellent history dept. Check out their site.

I get automatic in-state tuition if given a scholarship?

Some other things:
I like football, but it’s not essential.
I come from a small town, and I don’t think I could survive in a city with bad rush hour.
I want to pursue a BA in history, and maybe minor in english.
I was planning to apply to CofC, as well.

BTW, what are the odds of my getting a merit scholarships with these stats:

3.5 UW GPA
25 ACT
French Club
Chess Club
Quiz bowl team member
Boy Scouts of America, first class rank and assistant senior patrol leader
Placed 9th in state in history competition
Wrote novel at 16

If you like football, Clemson’s the better place to be
Columbia isn’t a huge city so I think you’ll do fine there
USC and C of Charleston would be best for your majors, also Clemson is not very generous at giving scholarships

I think you will get into all of the SC state schools with those stats

I can’t find Clemson’s any longer, but the required stats were higher I believe. She will go to our state U though because her merit award there essentially covers tuition and some other costs.
