Clemson University or Virginia Tech?

I am stuck between Virginia Tech and Clemson University. I want to major in Pre-Veterinary/animal sciences. They both have good programs. My mother isn't much help. But she has told me that I shouldn't go to far so that if i'm feeling homesick then I can drive a few hours and be home. I'm looing for a college with my major and have found that Clemson has a higher rating compared to VT. What I want to know is are the people friendly, which place feels more like a college is supposed to feel like, if they are party schools (i'm not interested in parties so it would be a negative if they were) , which one is worth the money because both of the schools are out of state and cost about 35,000. CU has more in their pre-vet program, they have a mentoring program where incoming freshmen girls who are majoring in pre-vet can be a part of a living learning community and VT doesn't have that. I'm fluctuating between te two because this is a big expensive decision. I also want a school that's not all work, but a little play. Any help?

Clemson and VT are quite similar in many ways. I don’t think you can go wrong with either choice, especially given your academic interests. Both are rural and offer beautiful campuses. (My s felt that Clemson was even more rural than Tech actually). Both have great school spirit and the students seem very happy to be a part of their school. Community feeling at each; sound academics at both as well.

Can you visit both campuses to see which you like better? I like the pre-vet learning community that Clemson offers. VT has a Pre-Vet Club that may be fun for you to join if you ended up there: [Pre-Veterinary Medical Association at Virginia Tech | Pre-Vet Club of Virginia Tech](http://www.prevet.org.vt.edu/)

You would get an opportunity for a great education at either one. A visit to each with maybe an appointment to talk with faculty/staff from your intended major could make your decision a bit clearer. Good luck with everything!

You also might want to consider NC State… it has animal science major and a Vet. School. It’s in a city and much closer to MD than Clemson. NCSU also has a program for girls called WISE (Women in Science and Engineering).

Hey! I had to make the same decision as you when I was a high school senior except for engineering. I visited both and absolutely both. To be honest, I ended up randomly picking Clemson and I haven’t regretted my decision since! Both are fantastic schools, excellent programs in the sciences. The people at Clemson are really friendly. You can definitely get the college experience at both schools. Also, lets be honest, there will be parties at both schools and a lot of people will partake in them. It’s a large school so you will know people at both schools that are more interested in parties than academics. However, I don’t think either schools are known around the country as major “party schools”. I don’t go to a lot of parties (academics first) but I have made many friends and have done tons of fun-stuff outside of schoolwork by participating in different student organizations! (There are hundreds on both campus) As for which school is worth more for the money, that is a toss-up as well since the science majors at both schools are excellent. Good luck with your decision! It’s gonna be hard to make a wrong choice here! (Obviously I’m biased and think you should pick Clemson  )
Like KandKsmom said, a visit is going to be the only way you can really make a good decision.

Feel free to let me know if you have any other questions about Clemson! I’m a junior majoring in civil engineering.

Clemson and VT are very popular choices for students in our town. We know several current students attending both colleges for their Vet program and have not heard a negative thing from any of them. I would say we hear more positives about Clemson and their school spirit and friendly student base but VT has some fiercely loyal alumni as well. I would visit both schools if possible and hopefully one will “feel” like the right fit. Good luck to you!

Thanks for replying. I’m going o a VT open house in November to get a feel of the campus, but my parents don’t want to drive all the way down to south carolina, so I’m going by pictures, webcams, and anything else I can find about Clemson. I think because both schools are pretty equal in all aspects I’m having a hard time. But I’m going to take my time and be sure. I am very interested in Clemson, but my mom thinks VT would be the best school for me because she doesn’t want me to be too close but no too far so that in case I get home sick it’ll be a few hours drive to come visit for a weekend. I’m hoping that the open house will give me an idea. I’m still keeping an open mind for other colleges since I don’t have to apply until around December. So if anyone has any other suggestions I’ll be sure to look into them. (In-State or Out doesn’t matter)
