So I have narrowed my list down to these 2 schools and have been accepted at both schools. Which is better for civil engineering and which school should I go to?

bump…

Flip a coin. Both pretty campuses with HUGE sports legends. Both big state schools. Both strong engineering schools. Both really strong alumnae association and very strong student loyalty. Clemson is a tad more southern than VaTech. But you really can’t go wrong at either school and it really boils down to you and that feeling you get when you are on campus.

I’d go with Clemson because its a little smaller and seems to have a more diverse population area-wise (I know VATech is more diverse ethnically). But you really can’t go wrong with either.

Does cost make a difference?

bump?? anymore opinions?

Pierre, Virginia Tech is a stronger Engineering school than Clemson. VTech is ranked #14 in Engineering whereas Clemson is ranked #51. That’s not a huge difference, but it is significant. Furthermore, VTech is ranked #12 in Civil Engineering and Clemson is not ranked.

TPL, Clemson is not more geographically diverse than VT. Roughly 30% of Clemson undergrads are from OOS, as opposed to 25% at VT. VT also has 400 international undergraduate students, as opposed to Clemson’s 50.

As for which school Pierre should attend, only he can decide.

Agreed. Its truly a flip of the coin. Very similar schools and both are a lot of fun, by the way, irrespective of the horrific tragedy at VaTech two years ago. Its an extremely safe campus. I know someone there (who was in the dorm building where some of the tragedy unfolded) and after taking a semester off to “get his head straight” about what had happened, is now back at Va. Tech and thriving. They are both fierce competitors in the ACC as well.

I like VT over Clemson. But Clemson is relatively close to Atlanta. VT is relatively isolated. It is quite far from DC/NoVA.

bump…thanks for all the opinions so far!

anyone else? 2nd bump…

My son narrowed his search down to Clemson and VT. He has been extremely happy with Clemson. The engineering program is excellent. He is in the honors program and all students have the opportunity to apply to this program if they meet the requirements while they are in Clemson. Greenville is a really cool town and only 30 minutes away.

^^^ Pierre’s last post was over a year ago. But you’ll be glad to know he’s been at Clemson with your son for the last year, and apparently loving it. :)
