CLEP American Gov't

My son took the CLEP American Government yesterday. He also took the AP US Gov't test last week. I had him take CLEP because is VERY strong with multiple-choice questions, while essays are weaker. Here is his analysis/comparison of the multiple choice questions on both tests. He says the AP exam multiple-choice questions were more consistent in terms of level of difficulty. CLEP American Government had some easy, some mediocre and some difficult questions on it. One point to remember is that on the CLEP you are not penalized for guessing. So, you are all waiting to hear how he did....a 65....which is worth 4 units of credit at University of the Pacific. I did not want to wait to find out that he did not attain at least a 4 on the AP test (required by most private schools). It was worth the $$ to have him take the CLEP while the knowledge was still foremost in his mind. A word about prep...I purchased Peterson's online prep...you get three full-length, online exams for $20. He took one the night before and finished in 60 mins. CLEP itself also finished in 60 mins. Worth the money I spent!!!

I hope this helps someone out there!

Tracy in Cali

Thanks, Tracym! We’ll check out Peterson’s. Only need a 50 on the CLEP to get the credits.

And might I suggest that if finances are a concern, check to see if any of your local library systems have a database subscription to Gale Center’s “Testing & Education Reference Center” as this contains the Peterson CLEP practice exams… for free! I discovered one of our local libraries had this here in SoCal.

Thanks, Buckeye! Oh, and Boiler Up! (Sorry, couldn’t resist)

I hope you will return to let us know how he did on the AP so we can compare likely outcomes. Thanks!

My son made a 3 on the AP American Govt exam. Mostly because he is so into politics that his essays were probably very opinionated. College only takes a level 4 so he took the CLEP. Took him about 45 minutes total and he passed easily. Well worth the money.
