CLEP Exam Credit Recognition

I am a full-time rising senior at Villanova plan on sitting for the New York State CPA exam within the next year or so. I need 150 credit hours from a “regionally accredited four year college or university” as specifically explained on the NYS CPA exam website to take the exam. In an effort to save money, I took the Introductory Sociology CLEP exam in August 2014 to help get myself to that requirement. Villanova only accepts CLEP credit for part-time students and therefore will not accept my test for credits at this time. With this in mind, I called SUNY at Stony Brook to confirm that although I wasn’t enrolled at the institution that I would be able send the scores to them for credit. The person who I spoke to told me that I would be able to do that. Fast forward to today to where I have now been told by Stony Brook that they cannot accept my test for credits since I have never taken a course at the university (exactly what I had anticipated and made sure to confirm with the school as well as with CLEP beforehand). I can send my CLEP scores to any other school, but I want to make sure that the school will actually accept the credits even though I am not and have never been enrolled there.

So my question is this: What schools do any of you know of that would accept a satisfactory CLEP exam score for credit hours without requiring previous/current enrollment at the school? If this isn’t possible anywhere, would it be possible that I have the scores sent to Villanova as a part-time student after I graduate so they would appear on my transcript eventually? If none of this is possible, does anyone have any other ideas for this exam to eventually count for CPA-accepted credit hours? Thanks!

In other words, you are hoping to find a college/university to “launder” your CLEP score into college credits. Not ethical, and I don’t think you want that to be part of your record! Now if you decided to transfer to another university to complete your senior year, that would be different.

I’m trying to get the exam to count as having taken a college course; like any other person who takes a CLEP exam. Are you going to arrest me, CLEP Police? 8-|

You say “CLEP Police”, I say CLEP Policies. CLEP exams are a wonderful way to earn college credit for passing scores, assuming the college you are attending or hope to attend has a CLEP policy in place. Unfortunately, it does not sound like this last part of the requirement was met.

As I posted previously, if you decide to transfer to another college, then maybe your exam would be counted for credit. At the same time, though, sometimes transfers cause you to lose credit from other previously taken courses…
