Has any of your kids taken CLEPS? What were their experiences with the exams? How did they prepare to take them? Thanks in advance.

Homeskulmom:

Please keep in mind that many colleges do not accept CLEPS.

I guess no one on CC takes CLEPS.

According to College Board, the organization which administers CLEPS, 2,900 colleges give CLEP credit, including Princeton U, Columbia U, and Amherst.

If anyone has taken any of the tests, I'd like to know your experiences with them. Thanks.

My first response was lost in some glitch, so I'll try again. Both of my kids took CLEPs. The older one received little credit because the university she selected requires additional essays/tests and she was told that the grading professors almost never grant credit. She did receive credit for one science exam & the econ. exam, which was helpful. The main benefit for her was that passing the CLEP general exams boosted her confidence. As a former unschooler (age 6 - 17), she was concerned about college and that clamed her fears. The younger one selected a college (within the same university) in which more CLEPs are accepted and he received credit for, IIRC, 24 semester hours. He also took a couple of math courses during his final year at home. Between those credits and the CLEPs, he will be able to graduate in three years.

In general, CLEP testing was a positive experience for our family. The man who ran the testing center at a local college became a great booster for our kids and bragged on them as if they were his own. The level of anxiety about college dropped dramatically once dd realized how little test prep she had to do to pass the tests.

I took two courses when my young son was two months old. I was able to self study and gain some college credits and watch a young baby. I highly recommend the program if your college offers such credit.

Thank you Robi and overseas! That was what I wanted to know.

homeskulmom: I went back to school 5 years ago, also self studied some Clep subjects; took 6 different tests, and passed all with full college credit granted for each (I investigated the subjects that would grant me credit). I was at Chapman U at the time. Saved more than $6k by testing out. I highly recommend it, especially if it's a subject one has knowledge of or interest in.

I work in education on a military base and CLEPS are widely used by the active-duty to knock out credits for undergraduate work. These aren't Ivy-bound scholars but are usually applying credits to a state school.
