CLEP French Questions and Help needed! Also CLEP or AP?

My daughter took 2 years of HS French and we have found out that for her future university major, she will be required to take 4 semesters of ONE foreign language. We are researching doing CLEP for French instead of taking the classes (or AP-see below) as a 63 or better will give her all 12 credits of French.

I am finding, however, that there is NOT a lot of information about how to prepare for this exam. I am going to purchase the CB CLEP French Language Examination Guide but it is my understanding that this is simply a practice exam, with no explanations, and nothing else.

I have already purchased the AP French Exam book (because it had a French Listening CD with it) as well as the Princeton Review SAT French Subject Test Book.

InstantCert does not offer French or it didn’t at last glance.

So. The questions are:

Can my daughter take the AP French Test in May if she didn’t take the class? (This would provide the same number of credits as a 63 or better on the CLEP.) Or, would she be wiser to take the French CLEP exam?

How does one prepare for the French CLEP exam? The sources I’ve found on the web (ie. Study Guides) all have pretty negative reviews.

I don’t want to waste my daughter’s time so I want her study to be focused on studying that will get the job done in a succinct and logical manner.

Any helps are appreciated as well as links you might have to current information that would be helpful on the web.

Thanks so much, in advance!

Part of this test will involve being able to read (and understand) French, answering multiple-choice question which are either displayed in print on the screen, and then another section which requires that you understand the spoken word (the questions and possible answers are spoken).

I have heard people say that you should look for all kinds of media options in the foreign language - newspapers, radio stations, movies (where you set the caption to French), songs, etc.

My daughter also took 2 years of HS French and didn’t want to waste her time (and schedule) in college taking back-to-back semesters of the same language (very tight schedule). She took her time and studied for this CLEP exam once she found out it would be accepted as the credit she needed (as long as she passed). She used DuoLingo, but I am sure there are other options out there to use to practice the written and spoken word. Just remember, there is NO part of the test which requires the tester to speak the language.

Good luck!
