CLEP

Why do CLEP scores expire after 20 years? (is that true?)

Why don’t most colleges accept CLEP?

Do you think it’s okay to use CLEP?

  1. Hadn’t heard that - not sure if it’s true or not, or even exactly what you mean. Why would someone sit with CLEP scores for 20 years?

  2. I’ve seen a number of colleges accept CLEP - they tend to be public institutions as far as I can tell, but we haven’t looked at many private colleges. The best thing to do is search the College Board web site (think they have a database for this info); or even better, go directly to a particular school and search their CLEP policies.

  3. Generally speaking, I think CLEP is great for courses that don’t pertain to your major. I.e., you are a STEM student trying to knock off some humanities credits so you have more time for another STEM field minor. I would not want to CLEP out of subjects that are a foundation for my field of study. That’s just my opinion though. Sometimes it’s nice to take a traditional elective course that’s not in your major to “lighten” the load, or just for personal enjoyment. It really depends on the situation.
