Please give me any insight you can on CLEPs. I have borrowed study materials from library but would like to hear from those with personal experience.

I have never taken a CLEP test, but have found that many of the competitive colleges and universities do not accept CLEP credit. So check with the college before taking the CLEP test.

Homeskulmom, I agree with Justinian, and I think it might make more sense for you to focus on AP tests instead. Colleges don't always accept them for credit either, or sometimes they put limits on how many they will accept, but AP's also have value in the college application process.

According to the college board's website, many of the top colleges do accept CLEPS. Is that just PR? I just did a preliminary search of the state of Massachusetts and got a long list of universities that accept CLEPS, including Amherst, BoCo, Boston U, Hampshire. These are good schools.

Do you think the college board website just wants people to pay the $ to take the tests and then have to pay them (again) to take APS?

I'm sure many colleges DO accept CLEP, while others do not. It is another case of "Check with the college." If you have a pretty good idea where your student will be going to college, check with that college (or those colleges). That is the only way you can be sure.

Hi, I responded on the Parents board, so won't repeat all that here. It's true that some colleges don't accept CLEP while some top private schools are more generous with credits than some state schools. One of my kids received 14 sem hrs. credit (8 sci., 6 econ.) while the other received 24 sem. hrs. credit. In both cases, passing multiple CLEPs helped boost their confidence about their ability to handle college courses. I don't regret the older one taking exams for which she received no credit, but others might not want to spend the time & money until they're certain that a particular test will be accepted.

Thank you, Robi, for replying to my question. I was beginning to suspect that everyone wanted to answer a question about CLEPs I hadn't asked :(

I think people were trying the best they could to help you, Homeskulmom.
