Clever College Marketing Tools - what have your kids received?

I am posting this out of curiosity - since I didn't have D "check the box" at testing time she has only gotten mail from schools for which she has put herself on the mailing list, plus a few schools that have shown interest in her athletics...

She received the nicest package from Denison the other day, one of the schools on her short list. It contained a card listing the ACT and SAT testing dates, what she should bring to the tests, and a #2 Denison pencil to bring to the test for good luck - what a clever idea!

What have other schools sent out to prospective students????

My older son-2 years ago- chocolate bar with the school's name on the wrapper when visiting, and an accordian style file folder also with school's name on it. He also got a school t-shirt with acceptance, a poster with the picture of a school's crew team, lanyard/keychain, and multiple pens. T-shirt and poster were mailed after acceptances. The rest were given when visiting.

Younger son-starting out early-nylon bag with school's name on it (he is in 10th grade)

My mom (accidentally) stole an umbrella from IU... Does that count?

My brother got a tee-shirt, a lanyard, a map, and a couple other little things at orientation, but I don't remember anything being mailed to him.

Just about 2 years ago son received his Early acceptance to MIT in a huge poster mailing tube filled with confetti. Inside was his letter with a special "golden ticket" congratulating him on his acceptance. Mailman had to do a special delivery.

It was all pretty amazing, we saved the golden ticket. Really got his attention!

Kat

In 2005 before Katrina, Tulane sent a CD with New Orlean jazz. That was cool!

Kids on Reed's forum were excited about getting periodic tables in the mail.

My D got a nice journal in the mail from Mount Holyoke.

We got promotional mail from one school that was like those books you can computer custom generate for preschoolers; "LittleMuffy will be able to choose from over 40 majors and participate in over 80 student clubs! LittleMuffy will love our 70 acre campus and LittleMuffy will be able to meet many other students from diverse backgrounds..." It was so cute it made me cry, but not necessarily want to finance an academic degree.

I liked the mailing that arrived from Harvey Mudd that started "Our name is Mudd." Caltech had a nice poster - though I've already forgotten just what was on it - science-y things. :)

Mudd's is just plain clever. The humor in the top ten list made ME want to go there and I am no math lover.

Stonehill's admissions packet included an acceptance "certificate" nicer than some diplomas I've seen. Union gave DS a t-shirt that said, "Union College - accepting the best since 1792" (or whatever year in the 1700s they were founded).

There's always the car stickers that come with the acceptance letters.

DS got umpteen emails from colleges offering to send him books on how to tour colleges. He didn't send for any of them... I wonder if they were all the same book.

Had a banner mail day a few days ago - mailings from 12 colleges. Son was happy until he realized they all said the same stuff.

Favorite stuff so far - a hat from Tulane (daughter got the jazz CD a few years ago) and a postcard from University of the Pacific that has a picture of a rock with son's name on it saying "(son) rocks!"

At the college my ds attends(RPI) the Product Design and Innovation students compete to determine what the institute will hand out to visitors or admittees(i'm not sure which). One of our son's apt mates won a few years back with a clear superball with the a hologram of the RPI loga embedded. The competitors have to build a prototype, demonstrate the ability to mass produce it and provide a detailed cost estimate.

For admittees they also had a photo competition for students posing with the RPI banner in unusual ways.

When my D was a hs junior she was inundated with college mailings. The only one that caught her attention was the Rose-Hulman Operation Catapult brochure--it featured a Rube Goldberg-type illustration. She ended up attending Operation Catapult (which she loved) and applying to Rose-Hulman which she had not heard of prior to that mailing. She was accepted, but chose to go elsewhere.

Wellspring - hubby went to Catapult in 1980 and matriculated to R-H because of it (it was all male back then)...good to hear it is still going strong!

Last year in the college search, my D received a water holder bottle (I don't know what to call it! You know, a heavy plastic bottle with a screw off cap with a spout on the top - empty) in the mail - not wrapped or anything - just the water bottle with an address label. The bottle had the schools name on it, motto and a phone number for questions.

D got one of the more imaginative mailings today---it was actually a postcard from Jacksonville University.....it showed two people standing barefoot on a beach at the edge of the water....you see them from the knees down. Beside them, written "in the sand" was D's first name!!! Very clever use of a cool font that looks VERY realistic. They also pointed her to her "own" web page..... herfirst.herlast.jacksonville.edu or something like that!!! On the website it was addressed to her (by first name). She's probably not interested, but it sure got her interest more than almost any of the other ones (except the U of Chicago ones).... very clever.

We just got the Reed mailing. I thought the funniest thing about it was that the only picture of students was from the back and they are huddled under an umbrella. (You have to understand that the only time I was in Portland in rained non-stop for several days and my windshield wiper motor died.)

Bard sent return address labels with DD's name on them with the acceptance. It made her sad to go elsewhere, but Bard was not her first choice.

DS didn't really get anything. I guess we picked the wrong schools!

We went to Bennington with friends whose daughter was interested when we toured Williams. The adrep there said they sent a giant chocolate chip cookie to admits. DS contemplated applying just for the cookie, but his better nature won out. (And doing the math on the cost vs. the cost of the cookie, haha.)

Oh, the water bottles are called nalgenes.

D received printed business cards with her name on them from SMU Cox School of Business. The cards came in an aluminum SMU Cox engraved holder. She thought that was pretty cool!

My D just received a box with a huge chocolate chip cookie from Ashland University. Apparently it was all the talk at the HS with some of the other bright kids really annoyed that they did not receive one.
