banedon you know I thought about pursuing sheep herding because my guidance counselor told me that people in the field of domination need to be focused on global scale operations, and career tests showed that I was more interested just in the local control. So she thought that sheep herding would be the logical second choice for me. However, my friends career test results are in and he is in line for a career in dictatorship, and think I'm going to sign on as his campaign manager.

I know a guy who wrote an essay about how he smokes pot on the weekends with his mother. He called it a bonding experience.

He was accepted into Harvard with that essay.

What? Are you kidding...? Smoking pot is illegal in the first place, so I don't see how Harvard would accept him...lol nice though

well if you've seen "How High" you'll know that it indeed is possible.

not necessarily, maybe his mother smoked medicinal marijuana and her son joined her on the weekends so that she wouldn't be alone.

Medicinal marijuana is also illegal.

4 months ago it wasnt

the point that is important though is that this aint a creative writing competition......

U can write gr8 interesting essays that make any one laugh...but is the essay meaningfull to be condiered for admission .....
U write abt something which shud be atleast not crap stuff.... the topic shud be along with being meaningful , sensible also........

So, anyone know of anyone that wrote a pretty mediocre essay and got into a top-tier or Ivy League school?

Probably lots of people. Someone said 90% of essays are mediocre. If harvard only accepted good essays, then that would be the only criterion for admission, so college admissions turn into an essay contest.

I have the same problem...I ended up writing it about my grandfather and the influence he had on me...is that too incredibly cliche? I honestly could not think of anything else to write about...he just died so it was kinda on my mind. I feel like I have such a meaningless, boring life. I tried to think of things that I could really write passionately about but couldn't come up with anything that wouldn't sound political :(.

Hey, I'm just jumping into this convo, but the summer before sophomore year i went on a trip where i worked at a kids camp on an underpriveledged indian reservation. it made me see the world differently and it was such a contrast to my home life. would that be a good topic? even though it was almost 3 years ago?

Thats the almost cliche topic...i went so and so and saw how so and so was unpriveleged..it gave me a new outlook on life..i was gonna write on that topic but realized how cliche it was..everyone and their mother writes about that.

Here’s a good post about bad topics.
