Cliche Essay

is writing an essay on a cliche topic such as diversity and/ or overcoming an obstacle, etc. a bad thing? not bad as in everyone writes about that, but like does that actually factor into an admission officer's decision like "oh, he couldn't think of a better topic so he sucks" thing?

personally my essay is kinda cliche... but for some reason i express confidence in it, simply because i refuse to worry about what OTHERS would think. instead, i just do the best i can and let them decide.

Not everyone has some crazy impressive or rare experience to talk about, so naturally college essays can’t be grouped in certain categories like overcoming adversity, etc. I think that if you want to write about something truly important to you, and/or something that changed your outlook or view of the world, then go for it! Just make sure it doesn’t SOUND cliche. Like “my hopes and dreams came true!” That’s an exaggerated example. But I would say if you have doubts about anything sounding cliche, search it on google and see if it shows up and lots of people have written that phrase before.
Hope I helped!

well, i hope my PHRASES aren’t cliche LOL

i think i’ll just stick to my essay because it IS important to me even if it doesn’t come across so, i definitely try. Obviously, up until submission, i’ll continue to edit it.

@hghschoolgirl: Well of course “my hopes and dreams came true!” sounds cheesy, but what if the structure of the essay is kind of cliche? Like, introducing adversity, its initial effects, how I overcame them, and my experience’s impact on me. If so, I’ve gotta rewrite a LOT of my essay D:
