Cliche Topics Supplemental Essay

I'm trying to come up with a topic for my supplemental essay. I keep being tempted to write about either an experience living abroad/a meaningful community service experience, but I feel like thousands of people write essays about those exact same topics.

If I'm trying to stand out from the rest of the applicant pool, should I try and find a different, more unique topic, or would those topics be OK?

the topics will be fine, but put in details - yes, there is at least one other person who shares the essay topic with you, but you did not do the things with him/her and you two will be different persons.
the details will make the difference, not necessarily the topic. it’s not a one-sentence advertisement, after all
