Cliche's in essays

Try not to become a man of success, but rather try to become a man of value. ~Albert Einstein

Success without honor is an unseasoned dish; it will satisfy your hunger, but it won't taste good. ~Joe Paterno

Would these quotes be too chiche in college essays? These are quotes in response to motto prompts

the first one sort of is, but i like the second one. Either way, it doesn't really matter if your quotes are cliche if you can write an original essay about them.

i don't like the 2nd quote. its quite egotistical

How is it egotistical? It's using food as a tool for a metaphor

If hes applying to Penn State its really good lol

the metaphor is egotistical. its saying what is success without the having people recognize you?

It could be interpreted that way, but the more likely (and of course, intended) meaning is that if you CHEAT your way to success, the rewards won't be as, well, rewarding.
