UW GPA: Freshman Yr (3.42), Sophomore Year (3.75-3.82, sorry for the range), Junior Year (3.82/projected)

#Chances at One

I made this Python program (for fun more than anything) to help you use numbers like these (i.e., these, or numbers you conjecture or obtain from other sources) to predict your chance of getting into at least one of a certain pool of schools.

Enjoy, use at own risk, etc.

Creating a list of percent chances...

Determine pool size.

poolsize = input("How many schools to be considered?: ")

Add each percentage chance into pool.

pool = [0]
for each in range(poolsize):
    pool.append (input("Input chance of admission to a school in decimal form: "))
del pool[0]
print pool

Compute P(At Least One) with statistical formula P = 1 - ()

keynum=1
for each in pool:
    keynum = keynum * (1-each)
chance = 1 - keynum

Print it!

print chance

By worst to best chances on your list:

Chicago or Cornell: 52.75%
These above or Wash: 74.01%
These above or Rice: 86.74%
These above or Emory: 94.56%
These above or Mellon: 98.31%

Diminishing returns as you go. As you can see, you are extremely likely to get into at least one of the schools you are interested in if your behavior and your fortunes are like those with stats similar to yours in the past. You can’t feel superconfident about getting into the top few ‘hardest to get into’ schools on your list, but you do have a good shot.

Most prominent possible source of error:

  • inspecific to major (can’t chance for Stern, just for NYU)

Still for NJ dude. Please return someday to report your decisions — and only when you get all of them.

fredferd

UCLA( letters and sciences) - 66%
UCSD( molecular bio) - 77%
Chance of getting into at least one of these: 92.18%
Chances of getting into neither: 7.82%

Good on you! Please post how it goes when it goes.

I bet I could make the program so that it just extracts the numbers and makes a list for me. That would be rad.

Awesome! Thanks!
