I understand that what activities you choose to do should be based on your interests but I'm sure its better to engage in something that really stands out during premed years.

I was thinking about doing EMT but unfortunately I most likely won't have time to take the courses and get accredited.

What else could I start doing this coming summer (preceding freshman year)? I'm looking for something that I could show commitment in and do every summer. Is there anything other than EMT that might look better than just volunteering at a local hospital?

My thing was medical service projects to foreign countries - see if DWB or something has openings for undergrads. (Mine were all arranged privately.)

Some colleges do have research oppurtunities but I'm not sure if they are open to the public or only the students that go to the university. -.-;

I was really interested in becoming an EMT as well. The actual coursework doesn't seem that bad (you can even do summer sessions usually), but your eventual participation relies on a) your own personal time contrabution and b) whether or not the area you are studying has any EMT openings.

Say I just go with volunteering at a local hospital each summer,

Are there any departments in particular that would offer more patient contact than lets say filing things all day?
