Closed Campus Schools? Really?

I didn't know there were schools that had closed campuses. That must be horrible to not be able to come and go. Doesn't sound much different from jail.

Yup :(

Luckily, my school has (albeit somewhat limited) open campus.

Yea…my school is completely closed campus, except for the days of midterms and finals, on which we can go wherever we want for lunch.

mine is closed… I cant imagine an open campus

^^ Same…

For free periods, people just wander around the school.

I’ve never had nor will have a free period so it’s not a big deal.

We have a 100% closed campus, and there’s no such thing as a “free period.”

And if you’re ever wandering the halls without a hall pass you’re up shi* creek.

I thought this was normal? Apparently not?

Yep. It’s idiotic. My new school has a closed campus and it’s operated like a jail. The teacher needs to write us a pass for things like going to another classroom or going the bathroom. There’s no trust.

I thought not being able to leave school was like… normal. Like, seriously, being able to leave in the middle of the day? ***. We have study hall or aide periods. I aide, but i enver do anything. So I grab the aide pass, go to my locker, and visit my friend who aides for a teacher during that teacher’s prep.

But I thought leaving school for lunch or whatever was a thing of the past.

My school is a closed campus. They used to not enforce though, but they have the past couple of years. (You only start getting free’s halfway through sophmore year)

It kind of sucks though, especially since I live about a 4 minute walk from school, and if I were allowed to, I could go home often.

Oh man that must be awful.

My school is open campus so you can just leave whenever you need to. It’s nice during your lunch period because if you have a car, you can eat wherever you want (I know some kid that lives close who uses his lunch period to go home and play Xbox with his friends lol. One group of guys always play soccer outside with little nets they bring, it’s pretty cool). I also like it because if I forget something in the car or need to run to a store real quick during lunch, I can just do it.

Of course some idiots abuse it and if you continually cut class, you’ll get detentions and saturday schools. But no one is really going to force you to go.

I love open campus though. It’s kind of like a college simulation, which I thought was the purpose of most high schools – to prepare you for college.

Open campuses would decimate graduation rates here

We can’t go back to our cars, and we need locker and bathroom passes during class. At LUNCH this year they even started taking down names of students who arrived late after the bell rang. I don’t know if they’re still doing that…Now I skip the cafeteria altogether and just go to the library.

Wow, I am amazed at how conservative some of your schools are. At my school its completely open. You can walk in and out any door at any time go out to lunch and such. I frequently skip my study hall 7th hour and teachers don’t bat an eye at it. I guess I just take it for granted.

I go to a pretty ghetto school and we still have open campus.

We do have a pretty strict tardy policy though.

I thought my school was pretty run-of-the-mill…

Cannot leave the interior of the building during school hours unless authorized to do so by parential consent or escortion of staff member

Must have valid hall pass while in halls during class time that indicates destination, route you’re taking to get there, what time you left class, and how much time the teacher alloted for you to be gone (and if you are caught with an “expired” (outside of the alloted time) pass, you get truant no matter what.)

Must be in the cafeteria during lunch, and being late to lunch results in table washing and potential unexcused tardiness to next class

Cannot use the library unless you are with a class

Locker passes are NOT permitted at any times

Vending machines and Soda machines are turned off during school hours

Being in the hallway without a pass results in a two hour detention that if you do not serve within 48 hours results in 2 days suspension

^ Same deal with being late to class

…The fact that some high schools allow people to leave during lunch and go in the hallways was news to me.

Anyone can go pretty much anywhere within our school if they aren’t supposed to be in class. Seniors can leave after their last class, which can be really early on some days if you have a light schedule or are lucky enough to have all of your free periods at the end of the day. In the final quarter, seniors can just show up whenever their first class is. Nobody is allowed to leave school and then come back without a teacher or administrator’s permission

since when were open campuses the norm? this isn’t the 70’s anymore…

How small is your school? The cafeteria at my school could fit maybe 100 people.

One of my friends regularly sneaks off campus during lunch. Some other kids do so as well. Out lunchroom can really only hold about 400 people, and most kids eat outside on the Commons (the weird thing is that where people eat is almost perfectly divided by race, black kids inside, white kids outside.) It’s definitely punishable to go off campus, but only if you get caught.

Besides that, my school is pretty much closed. We’re 7-12, and in a not so great part of town (a junior was held at gunpoint earlier this year, by some little neighborhood 12 year old), so the administration would rather not have kids wandering about, especially since those kids could be 7th and 8th graders, who are more reckless than you’d think. However, if seniors and juniors have 1st or 7th bell study hall, they can come late/leave early. Some people, if they have two study halls, will group them together, meaning that they can come in as late as 9:20 or leave as early as 12:35.

If you want to get out of school for a while in the middle of the day, which I’ve done during my study hall, you have to get a note from a parent saying you have a “doctor’s appt.” Then you can go. Again, it’s punishable, but only if you get caught.

Hmm. I thought open campuses were normal too. Guess not?

At my school, everyone just leaves during free periods/brunch/lunch and goes downtown.
