Does anyone know:

what the closets are like in the traditional dorms?
whether there are hooks on the back of the room's door?
what kind of bed risers will fit (round bed legs or square)?
whether you need to bring a lamp (besides a desk lamp)?
whether the extra long mattresses are also extra narrow?
where to buy a rug?
what stores are in the area so we can buy needed items after you arrive?
whether there is a lounge with a tv in the traditional dorms or should you bring a tv?
whether the rooms come with telephones?

I have not visited a room myself, but I have seen a brochure of WashU students and their rooms, and inside, there is a big ugly secretary like telephone (not cordless). So from that, I'm assuming phones are included, but someone who goes to WashU can confirm this.

As far as shopping for rugs, there are plenty of Wal-Marts and Targets in STL. If those stores are not your preferred places to shop for rugs, then you might want to check out Value City: Furniture, Weekends, Rhodes, and many many other furniture places to shop.

Hi. I will be starting my junior year at Wash U this fall and I will try my best to answer your questions.

I lived in a traditional dorm my freshman year and my closet was a good size but was open (had no door). I don't know if it like that in all the traditional dorms.

I do not think there are hooks but I can't really remember. You can buy hooks for pretty cheap at target that will fit over the doors.

Square. However, most of the beds are adjustable in height so you may not need them. There are a few that are not adjustable.

It depends. It can be nice..but it is not a necessity. I had one this year but none freshman year.

I don't believe so.

I think most of the stores (Target, Bed, Bath and Beynod, etc.) will bring in cheap rugs.

Target, Bed, Bath and Beyond, and Walmart come to mind. They all have their busiest days of the year during move in weekend.

They do, but it can be hard to watch something on it unless you scope it out in advance. Depending on how much tv you watch, it can be useful to have a tv in your room.

Yes. They come with local service and you can buy long distance service if you want.

There weren't any hooks on the back of the doors when I was in a trad. dorm. The closets are a nice size... maybe 4 or 5 feet wide? There's one rod to hang clothes on, a shelf above it, and room below for stuff like those plastic drawers, etc. Most of the beds in the freshman dorms are adjustable, but if not just use cinder blocks, it's a lot cheaper :) FYI if you buy the jersey sheets... my extra long ones were always WAY too long... my normal twin sheets fit better since they're so stretchy... but everything else xlong works.
