Seriously, how much should I bring? I feel like I'm packing (planning to, anyway) almost every item of clothing I own. How much room is there typically to store clothes, and how much do I really need?

I brought enough clothing (shirts, pants, underwear) to get by with doing laundry once every two weeks.

I plan to do the same.

You must be a guy. My answer to that question is, "You can never have enough clothes. Or shoes."

ditto apple.
how much is enough? well if you can't exhale while in your room, then you have enough.

lol, im bringing pretty much all the clothes i own. Why own them if youre going to leave them at home?

im a sneaker head.
i have 5x more shoes than my socks.
im pretty sure thats going to take up all my space for clothing ha

the answer is as much as reasonably fits, of course (and im a guy... though one who brought 20 pairs of shoes to college).

step one is to see if your college provides any information on the closet/wardrobe space in your dorm. floorplans, sample pictures, whatever. these will give you an idea of what youre working with.

step two, if step one fails, is contact your ra if her email address/screen name has been provided to you and ask. if youre not so lucky, you could either email residential life with your question or ask someone on facebook who lived in your dorm this past year.

should you learn that you dont have enough space i would seek out three or four sets of STURDY stacking plastic drawers. theyre the perfect size for folded clothing (even sweaters) and have a small footprint. the taller the drawers the better, by the way.

hey eric, how did you fit all your shoes?
i really want to bring my sneaker collection but i think its going to be hard to bring 50+ sneakers -_____-

You have to be kidding me...50+ sneakers? Even if you mean 25 pairs by that, that is way excessive. I am a female, and I have 3 pairs.

how many bags of clothing are you planning on brining (for guys)

I'm a girl, but taking more than two weeks worth of clothes would require spending a lot of money on clothes. I'm coming from 13 years uniform-wearing private schools, so I've never had a ton of clothes. I personally am paying for everything beyond tuition, room, board and books, so I'm only willing to spend so much on clothes when there's a lot of other things I need just as much.

I've seen the dorm closets at my school, and there's no way my clothes are going to fit. I have enough sweaters/jackets and a pair of jeans for every day of the month for two months, so I guess I'm going to have to cut down.

:(

get those under the bed storage boxes...

haha I agree with the poster who said why own them if you leave them at home. that's true. actually, I'm trashing a good portion of my wardrobe (well... donating actually) because when I went to boarding school I never took them with me so I haven't worn them in 3 years.

I'm a runner and I have like 20 pairs of old running shoes. That doesn't include flats, spikes and regular shoes.

You'd be surprised how much you can squeeze into that little dorm closet. I did it last year! I didn't bring EVERYTHING I owned though. A tip is to bring everything you have FOR THE SEASON IT IS THEN. Then you can just get your parents to bring you cool weather clothes or get them on your trip home or have them shipped or something, and you can swap out. You don't need your bikini and your parka at the same time.

I'm planning on bringing 2-3 weeks worth of clothes and unfortunately I have to bring stuff for all the seasons bc I probably won't be able to come home until xmas

and this is where going to school in a warm climate comes in handy...

I'd say you probably want to bring about 2-3 weeks worth of everyday stuff for all seasons (so you might need 15 t-shirts or 15 t-shirts and 15 sweaters depending on where the school is), plus 'extra' stuff like clothes for lounging around in and some dressier things in case you go out somewhere nice or your school has some kind of a formal dance or something. You don't generally get a lot of storage space and clothes aren't going to be the only thing you have to store, either.

Personally I just brought everything at once and kept out-of-season stuff towards the back of the closet or in plastic drawers under the bed. I don't have a lot of clothes to begin with and my dorm room closet wasn't any smaller than my closet at home so I didn't have any problems. I also didn't have to deal with dragging 3 suitcases home at Christmas.
