clothes?

hey guys im a girl from a southern state and I am going to trinity next year!
i have not lived in cold weather for 6 years now and i am completely lost on what i will need to have. I am trying to prepare.
any suggestions?

be ready to cover up from november - april! i'm from central connecticut and it gets cold! also, since you're going to trinity i'd suggest preppy clothing...and just watch out for the bums on the street that hate trinity students...

What do you mean by "preppy" clothing? Seriously?
I am from Nepal ,so I really am wondering what PREPPY means.......
It has been used so much in the websites but I don't know the meaning
and What is BUMS?

Bums are homeless people.

Preppy clothing is traditional clothing that isn't "trendy," meaning it doesn't fall in and out of style. Ralph Lauren is pretty much the epitome of American preppy clothing.

"preppy" pretty much just means "neatly"--think sweaters and buttons down shirts. but dont worry about the preppy thing--dress as you want, people dont really judge.
and the "bums" are pretty much a non-issue.
do you go to trinity, tribe567?? you seem to be spewing out a lot of garbage against trinity from a rather uninformed position. remember, the princeton review and a single college tour can only tell you so much. trinity students may be wealthy (not even that stereotype is completely true--a bunch of my friends are here on a ton of fin. aid), but they are also friendly and down-to-earth. broad generalizations are easy to make, but they're also generally false.

^ very true.

Sure it's not in the nicest part of town, but neither are a lot of top schools. Look at USC, UPenn, Yale, etc. It's fine, you're not going to get assaulted by a homeless man every time you leave the campus.

Back to the original poster -
Sweaters, polar fleece jacket, and a winter coat. Hats, gloves, boots.

For those at Trinity - any good local second hand shops for some of those things?

Otherwise readyfortrin, hit the REI, LL Bean, Lands End catalogs/websites for your winter outfits.

Funny true story - when I was a freshman in college (in Massachusetts), I was assigned a roommate from Texas. As the fall progressed, I asked her what kind of winter coat she had. She proudly pulled out a heavy wool sweater a relative had given her. That was her winter coat! Luckily I had a second winter coat, so it all worked out.

haha no I don't go to Trinity but thats the impression I got when I visited - a lot of rich snobbish people. I'm sure there are a lot of people that aren't as wealthy as you pointed out but I saw what I saw. 99 % of the people visiting with me were from private schools - not one was from a public school that I saw. As far as the "bums assaulting you everytime you leave campus", I almost cracked up when I heard that. Haven't you seen the signs around town of the people that want to kill Trinity students? haha they're out there if you look hard enough.

I'm:
a) a Trinity student from a public school.
b) receiving a TON of fi-aid.
c) therefore not wealthy.
d) unaware of any death threats being made via flyers around the city of Hartford.

To answer your question, readyfortrin, a down jacket, winter hat, gloves and snowboots are a must. Northface is a popular jacket here, and almost every girl has pair of Uggs. It snowed a bit today, actually, but Uggs have been proven to be all-season, and if you need sweaters/sweatpants, there's always the bookstore. Tringear is always the backup plan for warmth.

Congratulations on being accepted!

Hey let’s bump this thread!! A lot’s got to have changed since 2008, you’d think… what about for the girls… how casual/formal do students dress just on a daily basis? My daughter is a shoes freak, how often do you see some snappy cork wedges, summer sandals wih a heel, etc.?

Just saying, and no I do not attend Trinity and therefore cannot comment about the styles, but I’d like to say that you should be careful with footwear because honestly, there isn’t much time for sandals when its cold for a large portion of the time school is in session. This past winter was particularly bad (again, I can’t say how good the snow-clearing was ON Trinity campus), but right outside was A MESS.

i just completed my freshman year at trinity and as a girl from the south i can relate to this post. i agree with all recommendations already made, but as for what’s popular around campus i can help with. nearly everyone owns a north face. at first i thought it was just a trend, but i’ve come to discover that they are very warm and helped me survive the winter. patagonia sweaters would also work and are just as popular. barbour coats and burberry quilted jackets are very fashionable here although i wouldn’t know why because i don’t personally either. UGG boots or something similar are also a must. they may not look pretty but they do the job and like BantamBoy stated earlier nearly every girl wears them. i also recommend ll bean. their bean boots and wicked good moccasins can be seen around campus and i personally love my pair. as for wet days you should have a rain jacket (understandable) and some boots. a lot of girls here own a pair of hunter rain boots and they do a great job. the style here is preppy so it isn’t uncommon to see brands like j.crew, anthropologie, lilly pulitzer, or free people around campus. also stocking up on leggings/tights/yoga pants are a good idea.

as for the post about summer sandals, i wouldn’t say many girls wear wedges or heeled shoes on a daily basis, but if she likes them she should definitely bring them! noted summer shoes/other shoes i may not have mention already include: jack rogers sandals, rainbow flip flops, tory burch flats.

i know i mentioned a lot of expensive things but that’s the style around here, and i am in no way trying to appear vain. however, DO NOT feel like to have to go out and get anything in order to fit in and make friends. wear whatever you have and rock it :)

stay warm!

I second liveforscience. Sandals are not a good idea

Thanks everyone, in particular xbeachxbabyyyx. That is all a real help. LLBean stuff I am familiar with, but Land’s End had some great, great stuff on sale! I especially love the advice, “wear what you like and rock it”. <3

Trinity kids dress very nicely, but not everyone is preppy. There are plenty of sweatpants in class, especially in the winter. I would suggest buying a pair of LLBean 8" boots, insulated. You will wear them all the time from the late fall rainy season through the slop of spring! (When the weather gets nice, everyone is outside…it’s a lot of fun.) A down jacket is a good idea, but do not become obsessed with brands. So many kids—everywhere–look like clones walking around in NorthFace jackets…buy what you like and what is comfortable and warm!

There are a few times when you might need a jacket and tie, especially if you want to join a fraternity. Just keep it simple.

I have noticed my daughter gravitating to more “preppy” items, but she also has a funky side and mixes styles really well. Plan to wear short sleeves under sweaters because the weekend parties get crowded and really hot! Put your name in everything you own.

By the way, there is something “magic” about Trinity that I have not seen at other schools. Kids just love it there. My daughter will be a sophomore and she is doing a career planning program so she can go back to school early!

Sorry, Readyfortrin, I thought you were a guy, not a girl!! Forget about the jacket and tie! A few cute (but not too fancy) dresses are a good idea. My daughter swaps clothes with a few friends for special occasions because I refuse to buy her a new dress for every occasion. It’s a good lesson is sharing resources!!

One more thing: do not wear nice shoes to parties, as they will get trashed. Ditto for white pants!
